Dear Hair loss Experience team

I am 32 and just over a month ago (5 weeks) I had a hair transplant of 6425 hairs abroad.

I have followed this pre/post hair transplant surgery for over a year and would like to contribute to hear other peoples experiences and now I have had surgery would like to participate and contribute. I have a question and would like to know your answer as it's concerning for me and my clinic has not replied yet. (I don't expect a reply Xmas Day or Boxing day, or Sunday).

My hair transplanted - is shedding and whilst I know this is natural after transplant as I was informed. I am a bit concerned that the hairs shedding in the shower, on pillow etc etc ...contain the roots - because at the end of the hair shaft I can see a 'J' shaped structure which looks like a root. Is this the actual hair root/dermal papilla?! I would find it hard to understand how the roots can shed too over one month post surgery.

I am just very anxious and having spent a lot of money as well as time on this - I would want this to work.

I look forward to hearing from someone who has had this experience. My email iseanmoon1983@gmail.com

I have attached photos of shedded implanted hairs 5 weeks post surgery (before and after) – are these roots at the tip of hair? – I hope you can all understand my concern and worries.;ss; - I zoomed in on photo of some hairs that have shedded. Surely a root can't just shed one month after surgery like that? Has the transplant failed? What ever on earth is that at the tip of my hairs? Or maybe I am worrying too much.!? [):h::

I look forward to hearing from some guys.

Merry Christmas ;)

Kind regards

Sean

Hi Sean,

Welcome to the forum. Firstly congrats on your surgery, that amount of grafts should make a great change to your appearance. It`ll be good to see more post op pictures of the placement, also did you go FUE or Strip?

The grafts that are shedding are fine, often you will have hairs that have what appears to be the bulbs on the end. Try not to worry about it as its all part of the natural process.

I`ll look forward to following your progress.

All the best.

Bm.

Hi Bm - Thank you for the warm welcoming!

Happy Christmas to you and anyone on here. I had the FUE procedure. 4500 hairs frontal zone - 425hairs middle (zone2) & 1500hairs implanted on vertex/zone 3.

Thank you for the reassurance Bm, just out of curiosity are you a hair transplant consultant or doctor?

I thought they were the hair roots and that the implanted hair failed because some of the shedded hairs have those bulb ends some don't and when I saw those bulb or "J" shaped hairs being shedded - I thought they were the roots of the hair/dermal papilla. - Some were falling out without this bulb at the bottom whilst others were.

I just found this very informative video on YT which I'd like to share and reassures me even more: - It's the root sheath /bulb at the bottom? - So that explains the situation

https://youtu.be/YwcKjwMq6sA

I sent the photos off to my clinic who said have been forwarded on to my Doctor, and I will come back with an answer.

But I am so happy to find this forum - and I am sure you can imagine how worried I would be if my transplant fails - Because - like many on here lot's of time and money was spent. It was a two day procedure. - I may need to go back in a few years to finish off the crown - But as a Magician / performer it's the front that's more important and if it makes me feel happier and confident then fantastic.

I didn't want to go the comb over and I was losing hair everywhere but what really bugged me whenever I looked in the mirror - was the little island of hair in the frontal zone - as you can see in my 1st photo before surgery. It took the edge off my confidence when performing, dancing or attending social events etc and made me feel a little down....each time I looked in the mirror so I kept getting my hair dresser to shave it!

I just need to await results. My consultant/coordinator said I won't see results until at least the 4th month until new hair grows?!

This is my new hair line and me directly after the surgery. Someone said this hairline suits me - I didn't want it too straight across - I just can't wait to have a fuller head of hair and do some cool partings like I use to when I was in my teens!! ahaha;)

It's the 5th week post surgery and I am more or less how I looked before the surgery - most implanted hair has shed and the implanted area still looks red. So if anything I look worse than before the surgery but I know this will not be forever and must be confident about this. :::C

I have attached a photo of my hair line and one of me directly after the surgery and look forward to interacting with other members.

Best regards.

Sean ;)

Directly after surgery! - You can see a swollen forehead. (I expected this).

Hope it's ok to share these photos on here!?

I'm not a doctor or medical consultant, my advice should not be taken as medical advice. It's only my opinion and experience I'm going by.  I've had a number of hair transplants so I know what happens when the hairs shed.
Your immediate post op picture looks good, nice and clean work.

Thanks BM - Well from your experience you can confirm that they are not the roots/dermal papilla of hairs that are falling out that's all!?

Can I ask - what shampoo did you use post hair transplant? I use Wash and Go but it makes my scalp itchy and flaky. So you have been through two hair transplants? When did your scalp feel less itchy? - Because it really does prick and my scalp feels very itchy especially in the morning or after having a shower having washed hair.

Is there a way you can attach more than one photos on here - I thought I would do this for contrasting purposes - and for the benefit of other members who are curious or are about to undergo a hair transplant surgery:

This was me 2 weeks after surgery - all crusts have gone and the implanted hairs have grown and I look better - just shaved head.

Thanks for all your support BM - I'll browse through the forum and meet some other members.

Regards

Sean

This is me one month post surgery - Notice the redness is still there and that most of the implanted hairs have fallen out. - I guess this is the hardest part of the procedure - looking like you did prior to surgery with short hair and redness over the implanted zones.

When did your new hair start growing post surgery? - My doctor said can take 3-4 months or sometimes 5 months? Others have said 2- 3 months and they see new hairs beginning to re-grow!? ;)

I used a mild baby shampoo after surgery, then I have used various ones with head and shoulders thrown in. To stop itching you can use Nizoral once or twice a week but use a good conditioner as it drys the hair out.
I've had 6 plus hair transplants of various consisting of FUE, FUT and BHT. So I've quite a bit experience.
I can't confirm they aren't the roots but from my past experiences they look the same as the grafts that I shed, you would need to show them to a Doctor or clinic in person to get an accurate answer.
For adding pictures, click the gallery under your user name, upload there, then on a post click the G icon on tool bar, select a picture from gallery, then G again to select next one and repeat as many times as you require.

Hey man, my provedure was a FUE as well.
And yes, i had some growth at 6 weeks but nothing spectacular and its not something you should expect.
Now, at 4 months post op my growth is exploding. I can feel stubbles everywhere.

Your pics look totally normal for this time.

First growth is normally 3-4 month post op.
So stay relaxed.
Its to early my friend.

The next 3-4 month are not easy...
I for myself think the 5 month mark will be the point were i hit the fun stage and from then on i will see good improvements from month to month.

So you have to stay patient.
I know its hard. Veeeery hard.
But thats the game.

I see it like this:
Week for week went by... But there will be the point and the week were i put my hat off and go in the club and all this hard time will be over and ill be a happy man in 2016.

All the best to you.

Thanks for sharing Larry! How old are you may I ask?

That's really good news for you! haha I guess we are all different but I have a question? You didn't use any minoxidil or take pills, have laser injections or use other topical lotions or consume herbs to get growth 6 weeks post surgery!? - I am almost at 6 weeks now and all I have is a pale red scalp - with most of the implanted hairs (different sizes) fallen out and a few acne spots on the implanted zone. So I look worse than before! ;;::::/

Waiting is the hardest part - and I am sure you can appreciate that having spent thousands on it.

Best regards

Just wanted to update you - 6 weeks post surgery now - as you can see most of the implanted hairs have fallen out. Now what's left is a pale red implanted zone with the odd dimple - definitely the hardest part of this transplant procedure. - I also have a few implanted hairs that have not yet shed and they have grown almost 1". Is it bad if the implanted hairs don't fall out? Also some of the implanted hairs have not grown or are smaller I can see two tiny implanted hairs.

My Doctor /surgeon never said - but did say that most of them will fall out and but in some cases 5% or maybe 10% of patients keep the implanted hairs ...which do not shed and keep growing. - I read that one member on here who had a HT saw growth after 6 weeks!!?c;;9 That must be so lucky!? - I was told to wait until 3rd or 4th month.

I don't want to keep emailing the clinic with all these questions but will look forward to anyone who has an opinion on this?

Bets regards.

Sean

PS - Attached the most recent (selfie) photo. - Scroll back up to see what I looked like before, after and a week after surgery...and look where I am now - you can still see my new hairline still visible. My profile photo is 3 weeks post surgery, comparing all these photos & reading what others have been through - It looks like the most extensive shedding of implanted hair occurs between the 3rd & 6th week after surgery!? Well, that's what I have experienced so far. - (Back to square one!). ))N_)(:

BUT my scalp is less numb....the donor and implanted zone is still a little itchy and I really hope there will be growth by next month.

We must be patient! :::C

Thanks Daz

It's frustrating waiting - even though you know the hair will grow back I look in the mirror only to see I look like you did pre surgery lol.  OR LOOK WORSE WITH SPOTS AND THE RED IMPLANTED ZONE AREA'S as you can see in above photos .;ss;

Are you a HT patient? How was your experience?

I am almost 7 weeks post op - most of my implanted hair has now fallen out.

What are these things shedding? Are these hair bulbs, hair roots, existing transplanted hair, newly re-grown hairs? - It's not my old hair, - I know that for sure!!! There are some hairs that size on the implanted zone but not sure if it could be this?

Any ideas as to what these hairs maybe anyone?

You can see these tiny hairs here? The size of a pinhead as you can see?

Also attached a photo of the left frontal implanted are - notice the tiny hairs - are these new hairs or implanted ones that have yet to fall out? - As you can see - some implanted ones there have grown more. It could be these tiny hairs /implanted that are falling out but from the crown!? - Same as the ones on my palm?

My concern is that if they are falling out - they are not the hairs in the re-growing phase that are meant to grow for good and NOT fall out!?

Hey dude welcome to the forum, everything looks like its going as should be to me so far. I know its a stressful time after a HT but if at all possible dude you need to try and put your hair to the back of your mind for the next few months or so or its gonna drive you nuts buddy.
Its a real rollercoaster ride and we know where your coming from and know its hard when hard earned money has been spent etc, but worrying now when your only 7 weeks post op is going to end up getting to you. I'm not trying to be critical as ive been there and know where your coming from but it does look ok to me so far pal.;)

Thanks for reassurance - Well have every right to be concerned - hair shedding, scalp itchy and pimples appearing on implanted zones which still look pink/red and as a performer - I look worse! ;;::::/ BUT worst of all I can't use that Nanogen fibre (cover up powder) because it clogs up the pores - according to my hair transplant doctor.

Although the hair shedding is expected I was just wondering if all the implanted hairs are meant to fall out fell then why are those tiny ones still there? Are they new ones the roots have produced or old implanted ones that will still be shed, but have just grown at different speed to others?

When did your hair shedding stop after your HT surgery and when did you see growth?
