Hair Transplant at the Maitland Clinic

Hey guys
I want to tell you my story so far about my hair transplant journey so it can help you on yours.
It all started back when I was in my early 30's, (I'm 46 right now) when I started to see my hair thinning around the temple area, and then the crown started to follow. I could see it happening and like lots of guys out there I just watched it slowly slip away.
I don't remember when I became aware that a transplant was something that wasn't just for the Hollywood stars; but in that search, and there were endless hours of it, I found a couple of places that looked to be producing great results. One of those was Hasson and Wong and by luck, they were coming to London to carry out free consultations so I contacted them and made a booking to see them straight away.

I was somewhat nervous walking into the hotel to meet Dr Wong and David Anderson but took a deep breath and knocked on the door. What came from that meeting, in short, was that I was a good candidate for surgery needing 4000/4500 grafts to fill the thinning top area of my head.

After a few weeks wait Hasson and Wong came back to me with their price (I've since forgotten the amount) and at that time it was well beyond my budget. I was very honest with them and said I'd stay in touch just in case things changed.
Forwarding on to mid-2016 I was still keen on the idea of having a hair transplant so I contacted David Anderson for a chat and found out he was now working in the UK at the Maitland Clinic. After a long chat, I asked if he could make me an appointment to meet Dr Ball at his clinic in Portsmouth. Feeling a lot more relaxed and already knowing David I was looking forward to this meeting. Catching up with David was great and meeting Dr Ball for the first time instantly gave me a feeling that he was someone I would love to work on my hair.

Dr Ball set about drawing a proposed new hair line which he explained would fit my 46-year-old face now and also in the future. I'd done enough research and had plenty of chats with David to know that the ultra-low hair line is a game you'll chase forever and something that may not be the best choice in 10/20 years €™ time.

We spoke about FUT and FUE in detail and it looked like FUT would probably be the route I'd take, if any. That was due to needing around 4000 grafts in one go with the spare left for the future if I ever needed further surgery. FUT would also help to keep the cost down as FUE is a longer process and also more expensive.

My financial situation had changed slightly so I was very keen to see if we could get this off the ground. At the end of the meeting, I was walking on air and felt very confident as Dr Ball was definitely my man. He has many years €™ experience in the business and having seen his results and knowing what was involved I now had every faith in what he could do for me.

The Maitland Clinic was new (ish) on the block but with Janna Shafer and David onboard, it was a dream team of many years €™ experience in the hair transplant world.
Fast forward to the 29[sup]th[/sup] November 2016 and I was on my way to Portsmouth to have approximately 4000 grafts removed via FUT and placed into the balding area from front to crown.

I'd already been to the clinic the previous day to have all those uncool markings mapped out on my head, so the first job of the day was a hair wash and then to be shaved, and oh boy that really was a shock. It didn't look too great with the top of my head shaved and the heavy sides left, but my eyes were definitely on the prize.
After all the preparations were complete I made my way into the surgery room where Dr Ball was ready and waiting.

and you will find my story in video form (some of the surgery too) and a weekly/monthly update of my journey to date.
Happy watching guys.

That looks great... may I ask, what type of hair loss was yours? I'm a diffuse thinner which makes a HT that much harder.

Not sure to be honest been thinning for years now to the stage that most of it has gone. Got a good and strong donor area though.

And one today and 2 and a half months. I can see quite an improvement already and can feel more coming through that you can't see.

Your donor looks like a thick forest.... plenty spare to thin out and plant elsewhere.
Are you using Propecia or any other medications?

I'm lucky to have a great bank of hair back and sides, it's also one of the reasons I feel I needed work done.....so much hair but nothing on top. I am taking propecia, I started taking it 1 month before surgery, all seems fine and everything is in working order.

I thought I'd take a photo from the same angle as one taken before the transplant. Four months in and the results are really starting to show.
