SMP - How effective is it?

After several years lurking on the forum I thought its about time I became a member and asked your thoughts on Smp.

Firstly, a little about myself. I had a strip procedure eight years ago which produced satisfactory results, unfortunately the donor incision scar stretched with some permanent shock loss. I looked into having a double layered Trycophytic scar revision with a top doctor.. however he said there was no guarantee my scar would not stretch again. Bearing this in mind I put it on hold, my desire to have something done about the scar was re - ignited after reading about SMP.

I would like to know how effective it is at naturally camourflaging the designated area.. I don't want to go ahead and then regret it later if it's not natural looking, therefor forcing me to have a scar revision with the associated risks involved. Is it most effective with a short hairstyle? How long does the color last before fading? Who would you recommend I have the procedure with? Lastly, have any of the members had it done?

Hi Smp and wecome to the forum.

Smp is certainly in the spotlight at present,i've heard mixed reviews on it's success and how natural it looks.
What is the size of the scar tissue that you need tattooing, some pictures our be great.

Cheers Bm.

I was just going starting a thread on this,i dunno if others read other forums i am guessing they do,but for the ones who dont..on htn their has been talk of an smp clinic in milan called beauty medical,dr shapiro and Jotronic both think it is the best they have seen so far.It is not permanent,it last 2 yrs.

its a good thing that its not permanent, your hair my go grey at some point. gives you a chance to decide whether you like it or not.

Just joined so i can ask a question - how long does the ink last before fading as it will be a gradual progression to the 2 year life span. It cant stay the same color the whole 2 years - then simply vanish.

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts on SMP. It would appear quite a few people are looking into this as a viable option. The points raised concerning how long the ink will last before fading are of great interest, it's something I had not thought about.

The more information that can be obtained on SMP is vital before I make an decision.

Hairtech, have you viewed SMP patients in person.. If so what were your thoughts on how natural it looked.

Non permanent is def the way to go with smp at this stage,no one knows what permanent smp will look like in 5yrs or 10 yrs, potential problems are plenty but the colour change is most concerning, black to blue etc..this non permanent solution in milan is a no lose imo especially for me i am only doing fue scars,i still think smp alone looks too 2dimensional.Non permanent smp and maxing out ones fue donor could solves alot problems for alot of people.

Yes I have seen it up and close. We actually performed an FUE after an SMP. Looks really good. But that is one patient with a specific look... and a look he will have to keep for quite a while. I think we have posted his pics here on HLE.

Appreciate the reply Hairtech.. Like you say it's only one case.

Mars I have read that the non permanent SMP will fade significantly by month eight.. Not much of lifespan. It will work out costly to have it topped up every eight to ten months.

The two years quoted is the time span for it to vanish if it's something you don't want.

If it makes a persons life better for 8 months then i think a two day trip to milan will be worth it.

I am suprised with the 8 month mark, hopefully that time scale doesnt apply to the clinic in milan,if they say its gone by two years then you would imagine the pigment would be at least still at 50% at the one yr mark, once the fading reaches 70-80% i think it would need to be redone anyway as the cosmetic effect will be gone.

Mars, travelling there once a year will prove costly over your lifetime - another point that comes to mind, how will your skin cope with repeated procedures? Every time you have this your skin is cut by the needle creating scar tissue and maybe the need for more tattoo ink in the future.

That's a good point Lentak regarding the possibility of more scarring.

Mars, thanks for those links.. They look promising, however I would meet with several patients at various post treatment stages before I decide if it's what I want.
