Why Can´t Scalp Pigmentation Be A One Session Treatment?

For one, everyone is different, and each MSP case has to be taken on its own merits. The pigment will respond differently depending on the skin quality and type. The time between the first and second session can differ, anything from ten to fourteen days to maybe one month.

Whatever the time the skin and pigment needs to settle, allowing both to settle will enhance the long term result, especially if you are looking at years.

Here we have an MSP client documented through 3 sessions, and the changes that occurred leaving time between each session to achieve his result.

Before, 1st MSP first session, and after once settled

Next,

1st session settled, then 2nd MSP, and 2nd MSP settled

It is normal the first session will begin to fade, the second session will build on the tone and adjust the contrast according to the fading over the scalp, and possibly make adjustments to the hair line design if required.

For the majority, a third session is sufficient to build up the pigment to blend seamlessly with the surrounding natural hair; but there are exceptions

Different hair loss conditions and treating scarring can require more sessions as the skin has been impaired such as alopecia areata and scarring caused by previous hair transplant operations.

Great post! It is a challenge sometimes getting the client to understand that, although Scalp Micropigmentation will make a change immediately in his appearance, it is still a process that requires at least 3 treatments for a dense, pleasing result.

In my opinion it is always best to start subtle and conservative.

Yes AHEAD, there is a fine line between the timing between each session, especially if performed too soon after the first session. It is vital to allow the pigment and skin to settle, and each case must be judged individually as skin type and characteristics will vary, and areas of the scalp can also react differently.

Starting subtle has the benefit of being able to build up the tone contrast over time, starting with a darker tone allows for less contrast adjustments as it cannot be made lighter. The same with a hair line rebuild, as tempting as it may be to have a low hair line, it must follow nature ´s laws of facial bone structure; if a slightly conservative approach is initially taken it can always be refined at later sessions, but if the reverse the hair line is in place and cannot be made more conservative.

Thanks for sharing this Phil. It's important for patients to understand what the treatment involves.

There are those who believe that SMP can be delivered in one 'mega session'. Until clear evidence is presented to support this, complete with success rate stats, the jury is still out. Certainly the overwhelming consensus is that a one-and-done solution is not a safe or reliable prospect.

Our view on this would always be 'what's the rush?'

The results always take precedent over the time it takes.

it needs a steady build up of density and colour assessing the pigments applied after each session . If you apply too much density within the first session you risk double doting if you need to treat the scalp again.

Thanks for the endorsement of building up the pigmentation over sessions to achieve the end result. This is often over looked and not understood, or on occasion denied. The number of sessions, the time frame between each session can change from person to person, it is very individual.

Claims of a one session treatment with pigmentation or a hair transplant for that matter can be misleading, hair loss is progressive, there are many factors that need to be taken into consideration.

I endorse what has been said above.

Building up density in a more structured way allows better assessment of pigment during the process which means the correct pigment choice is applied overall.

Patience from a client is very much needed.
Most of my clients are happy with the above approach as they understand that a better result will be achieved.

Could one of you experts take a look at my post and advise on what the best treatment would be for my SMP?

Scalp micropigmentation, also known as scalp tattooing, is a cosmetic procedure in which pigment is applied to the scalp to create the appearance of hair follicles. It is typically done in multiple sessions to achieve the desired results.

There are a few reasons why scalp pigmentation cannot be done in a single session:

  1. The scalp needs time to heal between sessions. Each session involves puncturing the skin with a needle, which can cause minor irritation and inflammation. It is important to allow sufficient time for the scalp to heal before undergoing the next session.
  2. Scalp pigmentation is a gradual process. The pigment is applied in small, hair-like strokes to mimic the appearance of natural hair follicles. This requires careful attention to detail and cannot be done in a single session.
  3. The final result of scalp pigmentation is built up over time. The pigment is applied in layers, with each session adding more density and coverage. It is not possible to achieve the final result in a single session.
In general, it takes 2-4 sessions to complete a scalp pigmentation treatment. The number of sessions needed will depend on the individual's specific needs and goals.

Quality takes time.

In our clinic a typical SMP session for a NW6 type going for a shaven look pigmentation takes 3-5 hours.
One session gives about 30-50 % of the total result.
