Below is the text from the KERATENE website

KÉRATENE ® alphactive Retard is a systemic 5-ard enzyme catalyze inhibitor, formulated specifically to suppress the formation of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and delay the effects of this androgen on the genetically-marked hair follicles, sensitive to its chemical signals. KÉRATENE ® alphactive Retard provides an appropriate control mechanism for the progressive thinning of hair caused by hormonal and genetic factors, with potential applications in the trichologic field for the for the maintenance of the existing hair density, in both pre- and postoperative cases.
KÉRATENE ® alphactive Retard depresses the total DHT level by suppressing the conversion of the androgen Testosterone (T) to DHT through the adhesion to the 5aRD enzyme by obstructing the transfer of hydrogen atoms to the Testosterone (T) molecule and preventing its chemical reduction.
KÉRATENE ® alphactive Retard reduces the DHT levels with a factor of 2, 3 or 4, depending on the total DHT level. KÉRATENE ® alphactive Retard does not interfere with the endocrine production of hormones or with the production of the 5aRD enzyme and its inhibition mechanism does not rely on the use of antagonistic exogenic hormone disruptors or on the use of xenoestradiols or estrogens. Consult your doctor before using this product or any other medical anti-DHT treatments. Read the product description carefully before use. KÉRATENE ® alphactive Retard is not a cure for any registered medical disease. Consult your doctor for professional medical advice.

KÉRATENE ® alphactive Retard, in combination with topical KÉRATENE ® alphactive therapies, is suitable as sustaining therapy for the preservation of the trichological density for clinical cases of NW I, NW II, NW III (vertex only), Ludwig I and Ludwig II. This product is not effective in cases of alopecia totalis, alopecia universalis and alopecia androgenetica NW4, NW5 and NW6 as well as Ludwig 3 where total loss of hair density has already occured

Hi all,

The company Keratene is not an unknown among hair transplant surgeons and institutes. We have been using their FUE after care treatment kits for a long time.

In September Keratene Presented their new product, Keratene Retard, to the attendees at the annual FUE Europe meeting (this time in Berlin).

They provided solid scientific proof that Keratene Retard is able to reduce DHT blood values. If you are going to present your product that claims DHT lowering properties you better have good solid evidence if you are presenting in front of dermatologist and doctors.
Prohairclinic offered to perform a small additional test to backup the Keratene Retard clinical data.
We teamed up with the university of Gent to measure before and after DHT blood levels.
At half the prescribed dose of 1 capsule a day there was an average lowering of 25 % of DHT levels for male subjects.
There were no changes in DHT levels (slightly up) for female subjects.

More important : there were no side effects reported by any of the candidates. We have yet to receive any side effects from patients that have been taken the product for about 2.5 months now.

I believe this products is a good alternative for those who are unwilling to take medication (Keratene Retard comes as a dietary supplement) or do not want to risk side effects that are associated with Finasteride.

Prohairclinic is an official partner of Keratene and all anti hair loss products are being offered via our webshop:

I am interested in this product myself but am wondering if we could see any of this evidence shown on here. Also i'm a little unsure if 2.5 months is long enough to make an evaluation of possible side effects.

Hi,
I am 35 years old, I am using propecia for 6 months now and I really want to quit cause the side effects do not seem to slow down and I am really tired of being worried about my performance in bed. So, I was trying to find something for topical use and not oral, and I have read several things in this forum (and some other ones) about "home made" solutions. Are they worth trying? And what about this Keratene, oral but no side-effects? Is it possible to replace fina? I am considering my options about a HT and I have already contacted a few doctors but, as everyone else, I would like to keep my existing hair as long as possible. But I also want to be able to enjoy sex. Any suggestions?

From our experience most people that have sides from finasteride find out within the first couple of weeks.

We have not seen this in any of the test persons. No sides where reported in the recent second study nor in the first study over a year ago.

In fact we have not heared of any side effect to date, not from people using it nor from any of the persons that where involved with the tests.

I thought that side effects of finasterid caused by lowering the DHT. So a logical thinking based on that is that any person, who suffered side effects from finasterid, will be suffering from any other product which lowering DHT. However side effects are related also with how much a product lowers your DHT. On the other hand a much lower DHT, seems to give better results. So, at the end of the day, the lower your DHT drop, the biggest the side effects will be, but also the better results to your hair must be expected. Correct me If I am wrong.

I have no proof, but I believe it is reasonable to say that an extremely low dht level probably causes side effects.
Keratene Retard does not lower dht to the extreem and this may be the reason why there are no sides.

Hi Bverotti

Thanks for the update.

As pointed out DHT has a vital role within the body so in essence lowering it too much can cause issues, whether it is lowered via chemical or natural means. A positive "side effect" would be improved scalp hair as an example, so, this in itself is a sign of lower DHT in the blood.

The interesting part is how much to lower in order to obtain scalp benefits whilst not having the unwanted other issues such as loss of libido, body hair, breast augmentation etc.

Over the years I have taken Proscar and had manageable side effects in loss of body hair on chest and legs, no great issues though for me personally but one that body hair transplant patients need to be aware of.

I have also when taking Saw Palmetto at 900mg a day had side effects that were not there at 450mg dosage, so it showed me that even natural lowering can cause issues.

I will watch this development with interest and thanks for posting what knowledge you have on it.

We have recontacted all of the test patients and some of the people who have bought the product >3 months ago.

Again, nobody reported any side effects, not even the people that had sides when using finasteride.

Of the persons that have been on Keratene for longer then 3 months we had great response. All will continue to use the product, some of then feel that hair quality has already improved. This seems to be resembling response we get from finasteride users.

This will be interesting to follow as we expect an even better response in another 6 months.

We had a lot of people requesting more tablets packaging to cover at least 3 months. The current version is 60 tablet, and it is recommended to use 1 tablet in the morning and 1 in the evening.

As of today the Keratene Retard Dht lowering tablets are available in 180 tablet version. Therefore the costs have been reduced as well, benefiting all that are interested in lowering DHT long term.

Does taking 1 pill a day also suffice? Have any of your patients been taking it once a day?

Yes, but it does not work as well since the half life of 1 tablet does not cover 24 hours. Therefore you only reduce DHT on part of the day, but it shoots back up afterwards.
This is similar to finasteride, with the difference that 1 tablet of finasteride usually covers a 24 hour period.

I've taken a DHT blood test and the result came out to be 312 pg/ml which is in the normal range for DHT in males. This would suggest that I have high sensitivity to DHT in my hair since im still losing it at 22 years old.
How much of a decrease can I see in DHT from 312 pg/ml if I take it once a day?
Did any of your test patients have DHT within the normal levels at the lower end of the range similar to me and still take the capsule twice daily? Because the product manual says to take it once daily if dht is below 749pg/ml

If your DHT level is indeed in a normal range as it seems then lowering it will likely not bring you much of benefit.
Perhaps there are other reasons for your hair loss, check it out with a dermatologist.
