Hi Gav
We provide body hair extraction at our clinic and have done for some time now. Dr Acar's motto is more hair more density. In our experience, beard hair is strong and takes well. It's also thicker than head hair and is excellent to bolster graft numbers, especially around the crown area. BHE is an additional alternative for guys who may not have the best nape.
Results vary case by case as some guys really have almost no donor area and are grading in the region of like Norwood 6/7. Alternatively some guys may have had a fair few smaller surgeries and want a last push for the best density they can achieve.
It's important to understand that beard hair is not head hair and may feel slightly different to the touch. They are spread out and blended in with head hair so you will not have little "clumps" of beard hair because of the way that they are mixed in with head hair.
Chest hair can also be used but this isn't as strong. That said, some guys are willing to give themselves as much of a chance as possible to try to achieve their goals. A hair transplant, no matter how amazing, is not a magic wand. My opinion is body hair is a great boost for graft numbers used together with head hair.
