Getting a hair cut after a hair transplant

Hi everyone, been sitting on the sidelines browsing the site for some time now. I had a strip surgery of 3000 grafts 3 weeks ago, everything is going well with post op healing, no pain, the scar looks very thin with some redness around it. It looks as though I'm not suffering any shock loss either, touch wood.

My hair is starting to look ridiculous, it's a cross between a Monk and Crusty the clown. My dilemma is I've told no one about my hair transplant and I'd like to keep it that way but I desperately need my hair cut. I can't go to my local barbers as all my friends go there, I'm nervous about having a barber ask questions about my head if they see the scar. How did you guys overcome this? What excuse could I use if the barber starts to ask questions?
I blush quite easily which also worries me, I keep thinking ill panick before I get through the door never mind being asked questions while sitting in the chair.
Any offers of advice most welcome.

Hi Satnav1, maybe not possible, but if your Clinic was relatively close ask them if they have someone that can cut your hair, that would take care of your of your dilemma.

If a Hairdressers or barbers is your only option then I would say try to visit one when its a quiet period, maybe just after 9am.

I remember dreading going for a haircut after surgery, thinking all the same things you are. Once in the chair it wasn`t as bad. The barber asked how short I wanted my hair and I just said I have scars on my head so could you scissor cut to a length where they are still concealed. He never asked about my scars as I changed the subject and everything went ok.

Good luck.

Decisions decisions! I think I'll troll the area looking for a small shop that's out of the way that shouldn't be too busy.

Why not use a mobile hairdresser who will come to your home? There are sure to be a few in your area who would be happy to help.

Have you tried cutting your own hair?

With a decent set of electric clippers you can trim the back and sides of your hair to a length of between 25mm and 35mm that should be enough to hide your strip scar.

Do an internet seach on cutting your own hair if you feel it may be an option for you. I have done it myself and its not as difficult as it may appear.

After my first repair HT i used a mobile hairdresser as i was very nervous about the whole thing, no need really though she was lovely and very interested in everything. Following my other HT'S i went to an out of my area barber and again he was very interested too and again it wasn't an issue dude......the main problem we get i think is we build things up in our heads to be something much worse than it actually is due to nerves....trust me pal it was a walk in the park and i felt much better afterwards.
If you are really self conscious though then as the others said it might be an idea to ring the clinic and see if they can recommend anyone.
Congrats on your HT.;)

Satnav,

I hear your pain and went through these issues for so many years even today I don't like going to a new barber. Most likely from experience your barber won't ask awkward questions but the fear of them doing so and the whole of the room going quiet and looking towards you always made me feel anxious.

But finding a good barber who knows how to cut your hair after a transplant is so vital especially with strip. Going too short can be a problem getting the right length on top can be an art. It is normally a case of trial and error and when you find the right barber you stick with them.

As Bullit says mobile barber is probably the answer until everything has healed and grown in and you have the confidence to visit somewhere.

When I had plugs and 3 wide scars at the back of my head not once did a barber ask me about them if people want to talk about something or not they should be able to read that.

I understand your concern that you wouldn't want your mates finding out or that a barber asking questions, but as others here have said, it's not likely that you'll be made embarrassed. The mobile hair dresser sounds like a good option to be on the safe side. Best of luck!

Yesterday morning I plucked up the courage to call a mobile hairdresser for my long overdue hair cut, 7 1/2 weeks post op to be exact. I was paranoid she was going to ask me about my wacky hair, I could feel my face all flushed so I embarrassingly mumbled it out that I'd had a hair transplant.

She replied I have several clients who've had it done, then casually chatted to me about mine. What a relief this was, I found myself very relaxed engaging her in conversation about my hair transplant. I've booked her again for my next cut in 4 weeks.
I feel liberated now. Something simple as a nice cut has made me feel good about myself, it's put me in a positive frame of mind.

I appreciate the suggestions you guys and girls offered during my dilemma.

Peace.
