If a patient had smp into a strip scar and then some FUE later could it look overdone

Sounds like a silly question but lets say a guy has smp into a strip scar when his hair is buzzed to help disguise it and it looks great....then down the road decides to have some FUE into it as he wants to grow it out a little, is there any chance then it it will look odd like he has too much hair in that area or a darker line/area at the scar area....sorry if it doesnt't make sense but i hope you get the idea of what i mean. It must be hard to judge how many grafts to place into a strip scar when theres already smp there for some time and judge how it will look grown out surely.

Prohairclinic FUE and SMP
most of the time the implant density into a scar is kept low due to blood supply issues;so it is a matter of try and see if it needs more ...

Hi bullitnut,

I think it would depend on the extent of the initial scarring whether it would be worth having FUE. For example when the hair was longer there was a visible or feel of lack of hair density because the strip scar was wide or FUE was massively over harvested then it would be worth adding hair, but if not the case probably best to save the hair for future hair loss over the top of the scalp. Because you would still have blocked or camouflaged the scarring with the SMP anyway.

This is one of the reasons I feel good about using a temporary pigment; it gives you an exit strategy if you do feel the need to try something different down the road. That being said, in most cases I don't think adding grafts after having SMP done would make the scar appear too dense. Especially since the donor is typically the denser zone anyway.

Dear bullitnut,
Your question is valid. If the smp (temp or permanent) was done at a density that will hide the scar... then adding hair will create an odd look.

Situation similar to
1. Putting more pigment then required when doing smp will make it look unnatural
2. Putting more grafts then in the surrounding area of scalp donor will make it look unnatural.

It will be like a strip scar replaced with a dark smiley/moustache.

Dr. A
