Ex-ballerina who started losing her hair at 13 warns of the dangers of tying hair back too tightly
22-year-old Diva Hollands, who lives in Epsom, danced from a young age.
She believes tying her hair back too tightly led to a receding hair line. The mother-of-two has since undergone surgery to combat hair loss.

The former ballerina and mother-of-two has warned of the dangers of tying hair back too tightly after she underwent surgery to combat hair loss.
Diva Hollands, from Ewell West, Epsom, was dancing from an early age but now believes that years of tying her long hair back tightly left her with a receding hairline.
The 22-year-old suffered years of bullying at school resulting in a loss of self-confidence and self-esteem.

She hopes that by bravely sharing her own story she can help to combat the taboo which still exists around female hair loss.
Diva began dancing at the age of three and says her mother always made sure her hair was pulled tightly back off her face.

By the time she entered her teens her hairline had visibly receded – and she was forced to endure cruel jibes from schoolmates.
She said: 'My mum tied my hair up really tight from when I was really little, and looking back at pictures you can see it started having an effect on my hairline

Over the course of several years, she says, it got worse.
I was bullied for my hairline in primary school and then into secondary school, but it got really serious when I was about 13.
Since then I was completely self-conscious about it and did everything I could to hide the area.
It affected me a lot, especially as I was being picked on.
I remember the exact words a boy at school said to me; he said I had a forehead the size of a football pitch. It then became such a big thing in my life.'
Diva went on to train with the Royal Ballet School before quitting when she was 18.
She went on to do modelling work and is now a full-time mother to son Hendrix, two, and daughter Alabama, six months, with her fiancé David Lawson-Brown, 28.

When I met David I didn't let him see me with my hair back for six months. I then explained it to him and he was really understanding. For me, it's something that is very personal,' she said. After I had children I experienced further hair loss. That's when I decided to do something about it and get the procedure done.'
Diva underwent a Follicular Unit Transplantation in October last year, which involves removing a thin strip of hair-bearing skin from the back of the scalp, from where hairs will continue to grow when transplanted into an area of hair loss – typically around the hairline, top of the head or eyebrows.

Diva's surgery lasted eight hours and she needed to be careful not to touch her new hair for week.
Now, almost a year on, the former dancer says she couldn't be happier with the results.
I wasn't nervous – just really excited. I wanted to get it done as soon as possible. I knew I had made the right decision.
It all went fine and very quickly. I just watched films the whole way through. It was then a week for the full recovery and for the swelling to go down.
When I saw the results I was absolutely gobsmacked. After only a few months I could see my hairline start to grow back. Every month it just got better.
It's completely changed my life – dramatically. It's had a huge impact. I couldn't be happier with how it looks.'
She hopes her story will help others who may be suffering with similar issues.

I really do think there's a taboo when it comes to women's hair loss. I was so embarrassed about it.  It's why I'm sharing my story – there might be other women out there in the same situation. It can happen to anyone and it's nothing to be embarrassed about.'
Her surgeon Dr Edward Ball, who now works at The Maitland Clinic, said of Diva's transplant: 'It's amazing to see how much it boosts people once they've had it done – it's like they've had a new lease of life. You wouldn't believe the effect it can have.

This story has generated a lot of interests from females all over the world.  Majority are new to what hair transplantation is all about.  Much more education is needed for females.  Maybe a direct link to hair loss forums is needed in the articles?  We know many men will look online to research and there are plenty of hair loss sites and info for men but we need to offer more for women.
