Los Angeles hair transplant surgeon, Dr. Parsa Mohebi recently published the results of a new study that examines the use of hair transplants to treat psoriasis. The study, published in Advances in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Journal, was conducted over the course of multiple years.

According to Dr. Mohebi, €œPsoriasis is a common skin/scalp disease with presentations in various parts of the body. Our study actively sought out patients with scalp psoriasis and we transplanted hair into, or in close proximity, to psoriatic lesions so we could elicit a response. The procedure was performed on three patients with this condition. The lesions on their scalp were examined and evaluated after the hair transplant for any continued evidence of active psoriasis. €

After examining the results on the patients, Dr. Mohebi said, €œWe have documented evidence of clearance of the scalp psoriatic lesions seen in all three of the patients after they had one hair transplant. We then evaluated them periodically in a 7 to 15 month time period after the hair transplant procedure. The patients also had a repeat biopsy from the original area of the psoriatic plaque. No histologic evidence of psoriasis was documented in any of these patients. In fact, one of the patients has been followed for over five years and still shows no evidence of disease recurrence. €

When asked what conclusion can be drawn from the study, Dr. Mohebi offered, €œThe study suggests that transplantation of hair follicular units into psoriatic scalp lesions might be an effective method to alleviate the symptoms of psoriasis and it could possibly be used as a treatment option. More studies on the exact mechanism of this phenomenon may lead the way to novel treatments for this chronic disorder. One of the most interesting aspects of these results is the fact that this treatment has never been reported on before this study. The use of hair transplants could help provide relief to millions of people suffering from psoriasis scalp lesions that are resistant to more conventional treatments. €

Dr. Mohebi also noted that his office plans to offer hair transplants for treatment of this skin condition in addition to their other hair transplant options.
