Nice work by Dr. Josephitis, Janna. I like the wide distribution pattern for the extractions as well.

When looking at the donor area I too like the wide spread and overal it is a very nice result.

I saw a picture of an Artas donor area somewhere a couple of days ago and I must say it looks very very different than what is usually seen after manual extractions.

Janna, can you share more on that since you have experience with both manual and artas.

I'd have to look at the photo you're referring to properly address why there may be a difference.

What I can say, however, is that since the punches with the Artas are usually with a 1.0mm dull punch, individual extraction sites will likely look bigger than with the same size sharp punch by just a little bit. And then there would be a bigger difference if use smaller than 1.0mm sharp punch are used. Remember that the dull punch will first score the surface of the skin with a 1.0mm punch then rest of the way to the bottom of the follicles by widening the punch by another .2mm for a total of 1.2mm. So while immediately after extractions the dull punch sites may look bigger than with a 1.o sharp punch, the dull punches should shrink to the scoring size of 1.0 punch.

The other factor when using the Artas is that a "tensioner" device is placed on the donor are in 7cm x 7cm square sections where the computer sees the donor area to pinpoint at individual grafts. The tensioner also to make the skin very taut for the Artas to make punches and pull out the grafts easily. The grid/tensioner needs to be reset after each section is complete. You'll need to overlap the tensioner or there may be some noticeable lines of squares where the Artas did not punch.

We were very conservative with the Artas for the short period we had it. For example, we'd only use it for just half the size of the session then manually even out the extraction pattern to get rest of the grafts needed. Our spacing with the Artas punches were generally more spaced out than what Restoration Robotics said were typical spacings. The average may have been 20% extractions per cm2 and we'd do 14-15%.

Really nice result with a modest number of grafts.

Congrats to the team.
