5-Day Post-Op – Curly Hair FUE with Dr Grahame Shaw @ Westminster Medical Group, London (1,350 incisions / 1,484 grafts)

I’ve had the idea of getting a hair transplant at the back of my mind for a few years, but only recently decided to take the step and look into it seriously. Funny enough, the decision clicked while I was on the last day of a holiday in Istanbul — though I was 90% sure I’d rather have it done in London. I didn’t fancy travelling back with a freshly shaved and exposed head, plus a friend of mine had his done in Essex for a reasonable price and was happy with it.

I visited a few clinics in London and had consultations with three in total. After doing my research and speaking to the doctors, I decided to go ahead with Westminster Medical Group and Dr Grahame Shaw.

What initially drew me to WMG was that they’re based on Harley Street, which is well known for high-end private care. Their pricing — which they list transparently on their website — was also reasonable compared to others I initially thought would be more cost-effective. What stood out even more was the size and depth of their team: all the doctors are GMC registered and affiliated with bodies like the BMA, ISHRS, and WFI, and the consultants I dealt with were trichologists, not just admin staff.

They also use the WAW and UGraft Zeus FUE systems, which allow for much smaller punches when extracting from the donor area — this was a key factor for me as I regularly get skin fades and wanted to minimise visible scarring at the back of the head.

I chose Dr Shaw specifically after seeing a number of Afro-textured hair cases he had worked on — something other clinics couldn’t provide. His in-person consultation was what really gave me confidence. He was honest, transparent, and didn’t oversell or exaggerate anything. Everything he said matched what I had read from independent specialists online, and his approach felt professional and realistic.

The clinic itself is also impressive. The operating theatre is the largest I came across during my research, and Dr Shaw said it’s the best he’s worked in — which he felt allows him to focus and perform at his best. They only do one surgery per day, so the full team (doctor, technicians, assistants) is dedicated to your case — unlike clinics that run multiple procedures at once, which he said can reduce quality and focus.

Surgery details:
  • Goal: Restore receding temples and improve symmetry (left side was higher than right)
  • Grafts estimated at consultation: ~1300
  • Grafts harvested: 1,484
  • Incisions made: 1,350
  • Grafts included singles at the hairline, with doubles/triples/quads behind
  • I also asked Dr Shaw to fill in any safe gaps in the mid-scalp, as I’ve started thinning there too
I’ve included pre- and post-op photos (with my face blurred for privacy), including one with the hair cut down and surgical markings before implantation.

It’s now Day 5 post-op, and I’m very happy with how everything has gone. The surgery day was smooth, the team was great, and the hairline looks good and well thought-out. the scabs are started to come of the skin with the growth and cleaning, very tempted to pick them of as some are hoovering but I am remaining strong for now. You do start to be come less careful as the days pass which I think is natural and not to bad as long as you do not cause any significant movement to the grafts.

I am happy to answer any questions if anyone is considering WMG or Dr Shaw and post progress photos if requested.

Great hairline design. How is this looking 1 week on? Has the back recovered?

This is really good recovery. It’s barely noticeable. Has the implanted zone healed also?

Some shock loss in surrounding areas to recipient sites, and new hairs have been shedding a bit each day.

11 days?! Looks really good How did you remove the crusts without the hairs falling?

From day 7 crusts were natural coming off with washes. They literally detach from your skin once the wound is healed/sealed.

I did see a few crusts with hairs come off so i would say about 80% stayed but there all going to fall out eventually anyway during shedding phase. Im unsure on whether to keep cutting hair short through this phase untill growth or grow through the shedding.

Did you decide to grow through the shedding? I wonder how much u will shed…

I’m only at day 19 and won’t have my first hair cut until a month has passed.

So currently still growing through the shedding.

Wonder how much I will shed? All transplanted hairs must shed and go dormant before regrowth so eventually everything will shed.

Here are update photos:

DAY 19

From my research shedding usually happens around the 4-6 week mark, I seem to be going through the healing process quicker then adverage so hopefully regrowth will start sooner week 8-10.

Hi Mox, it looks like you'll be getting a nice new hairline in 12 months. Work looks good, your healing process looks great. How’s it looking now?
