I’ve had the idea of getting a hair transplant at the back of my mind for a few years, but only recently decided to take the step and look into it seriously. Funny enough, the decision clicked while I was on the last day of a holiday in Istanbul — though I was 90% sure I’d rather have it done in London. I didn’t fancy travelling back with a freshly shaved and exposed head, plus a friend of mine had his done in Essex for a reasonable price and was happy with it.
I visited a few clinics in London and had consultations with three in total. After doing my research and speaking to the doctors, I decided to go ahead with Westminster Medical Group and Dr Grahame Shaw.
What initially drew me to WMG was that they’re based on Harley Street, which is well known for high-end private care. Their pricing — which they list transparently on their website — was also reasonable compared to others I initially thought would be more cost-effective. What stood out even more was the size and depth of their team: all the doctors are GMC registered and affiliated with bodies like the BMA, ISHRS, and WFI, and the consultants I dealt with were trichologists, not just admin staff.
They also use the WAW and UGraft Zeus FUE systems, which allow for much smaller punches when extracting from the donor area — this was a key factor for me as I regularly get skin fades and wanted to minimise visible scarring at the back of the head.
I chose Dr Shaw specifically after seeing a number of Afro-textured hair cases he had worked on — something other clinics couldn’t provide. His in-person consultation was what really gave me confidence. He was honest, transparent, and didn’t oversell or exaggerate anything. Everything he said matched what I had read from independent specialists online, and his approach felt professional and realistic.
The clinic itself is also impressive. The operating theatre is the largest I came across during my research, and Dr Shaw said it’s the best he’s worked in — which he felt allows him to focus and perform at his best. They only do one surgery per day, so the full team (doctor, technicians, assistants) is dedicated to your case — unlike clinics that run multiple procedures at once, which he said can reduce quality and focus.
Surgery details:
It’s now Day 5 post-op, and I’m very happy with how everything has gone. The surgery day was smooth, the team was great, and the hairline looks good and well thought-out. the scabs are started to come of the skin with the growth and cleaning, very tempted to pick them of as some are hoovering but I am remaining strong for now. You do start to be come less careful as the days pass which I think is natural and not to bad as long as you do not cause any significant movement to the grafts.
I am happy to answer any questions if anyone is considering WMG or Dr Shaw and post progress photos if requested.

Surgery details:
- Goal: Restore receding temples and improve symmetry (left side was higher than right)
- Grafts estimated at consultation: ~1300
- Grafts harvested: 1,484
- Incisions made: 1,350
- Grafts included singles at the hairline, with doubles/triples/quads behind
- I also asked Dr Shaw to fill in any safe gaps in the mid-scalp, as I’ve started thinning there too
