Alopecia areata (AA) is an autoimmune hair loss condition. The hair is caused to fall out in small patches, around the scalp and occasionally the face and body. These patches may connect to become larger. Severe cases total scalp hair loss can occur and even total body hair loss. Unlike genetic hair loss or androgenic alopecia there is no safe zone around the scalp. AA is indiscriminate in respect to where the patches can occur with no known reason why. As a result, patches can occur along the hairline, hidden under surrounding hair, at the nape of the neck. Due to this a surgical solution, a hair transplant is extremely unstable. Hair could be moved and suffer the same fate. Therefore not recommended. Treatments used vary in results and due to the autoimmune nature it becomes difficult to isolate the positive effects. That said it is considered by using a vasodilator or treatment that may stimulate the skin and or blood circulation locally may be a positive trigger. Scalp pigmentation has been used as a cosmetic solution to hide the patches. More so on advanced or severe cases when the patches can no longer be hidden and the hair is shaved.
