Dr. Ron Shapiro - 1523 Grafts - Patient w/limited donor - 8 Months Post Op

This patient in his early 60 €™s had prior surgeries over 10 years ago by another clinic. He had several things going against him €“ one main reason being his donor looked pretty tapped out, not to mention he has less than average donor density. Dr. Ron Shapiro cleaned up the previous donor scar and tried to harvest as much donor as possible. The strip size was 1.2cm width x 31cm length. Given the size of the donor strip, there should have been around 3000+ grafts on an average patient. This patient received 1523 grafts instead. The hair count also indicates he has many single hairs. He has more donor hairs available; however, it €™ll have to be saved for another . This patient is thrilled at the improvement made so far. He feels this last session has made the most difference compared to his previous surgeries. He is currently 8 months post op so he has more thickening to look forward to.

Total Graft and Hair Count: 1523/2515

Breakdown:

1 €™s €“ 623

2 €™s €“ 812

3 €™s - 85

4 €™s €“ 3

Hi Janna,

Very nice coverage for the amount of grafts placed. How depleted was his donor zone due to the previous surgery?

Hi Westcoaster,

This patient had a choice to do a scar revision so that it cleaned up the donor area as much as possible before proceeding with a ht procedure. 9-12 months later, he could probably have achieved closer to 2500 graft session. He opted to get as much donor while cleaning up the old scar. The donor scar area looked poor. It doesn't help that he has less than averge donor supply to start out.
