I have found this forum very helpful. I had it done yesterday. So far so good. 50 yrs old. On finasteride and minoxidil foam. Early loss of hair late teens. Norwood VI. FUT 3240 grafts with 2.17 hairs per graft average. Amazing treatment from team and surgeon. Now we wait and see. Any idea on my likely outcome ? Photos from morning of surgery and straight after.

It looks good giving you a new hairline and joining the hair to the sides to to stop the bald appearance. Farjo work always looks clean and tidy.

Thank you. Do you think I will have reasonable density and coverage?

What did the clinic tell you that you should expect in terms of coverage and density ?

Limited coverage at back with diffuse density at back. Focused on frontal area with mature age appropriate hair line. Stated that my hair will still be see through. My gut feeling is that I might do better then that having seen the graft placement .

Welcome to the forum Doc1. I’m pleased it has helped you with your research.
Losing your hair at a young age sucks but at least you’ve been able to address it now. Those 3240 grafts have been spread over a large area which I assume is your choice. I like the high mature hairline and design. I think it will suit you well once it’s grown in. It will give the appearance of a non balding look, although a bit thin. You can always add more density with a 2nd surgery if you get hair greed.
How long have you been on the hair loss meds?
Thanks for sharing your story.

Thank you. I have been on the meds for 1 year. I didn’t notice any new hair growth but did notice a thickening of some of the remaining hairs. my surgeon and I were hoping when the grafts were combined with what little hair I had remaining it would give me a less bald look. My donor hair is reasonably thick and wavy so combined with thickening fibres may help appearance later on.

Day 2 after first hair wash. I am delighted with outcome at this early stage. Clean , minimal swelling and virtually no pain despite FUT. The set up at Farjo is ultra slick and my surgeon Greg Williams a total gentleman and professional. I am a surgeon myself and can genuinely say that at no point did I feel that I did not recieve the best advice and treatment. Greg was always honest and delivered above my expectation. This can be a difficult time even for older patients like me but the whole team at Farjo was superb.

Coverage will be thin behind the hairline but enough to create a good illusion with limited donor grafts. What density did they plant your hairline?

The idea was to blend the front with my existing forelock and tapper it to my low/no density crown. Also I was asymmetrical at the parietal rim so there was a lot of artistry and time / thought taken to maximise the effect with the grafts available. I think we all get hung up on graft numbers and density but it’s important to to use what we have sensibly and realistically. I am 50 yrs old and don’t think I can ever achieve the hair I had when I was younger. I have the option for a second go as the donor was managed sensibly. I am just hoping I don’t look as bald as before the surgery but I am confident that there will be a significant improvement. Thank you for your comment that I will have the illusion of hair….it’s what I hoped for.

Hi Doc1,

I've no doubt you'll be in a much better position once you've achieved full growth from your procedure than you were prior to HT surgery. Good to hear you had such a good experience with Dr Williams and the whole Farjo team. Some say the real difficult part of HT surgery is the waiting for growth. Best of luck!

I think it will make a lovely difference for you.
From what I have seen of Dr Farjo s work he uses the grafts well.

I`ve net Dr Williams many times, it’s great to see one of his many patients posting. Changes and benefits with the meds can be slow and subtle but they do happen. The wavy characteristics will definitely help, if you do add some fibres, I think you’ll be more than happy with how it looks.

Hi Doc

As someone with a similar progression to yourself, this gives me great hope. Looks like you have chosen a very sensible option in terms of hairline and saving some donors for possible future maintenance. I expect to visit Farjo myself in due course as I am in the Manchester area.

I have a quick question. Are you planning to continue with the Finasteride and Minoxidil? I am 2 weeks in and not sure whether side effects may manifest (particularly with Finasteride). I’m wondering whether if I ended up having to cease that medication, whether that would rule out hair transplantation? I suspect my current condition will get slightly worse untreated, so if this were the case I’d need to ensure some reserves were left in my donor supply.

Thanks and best of luck, must be so hard to wait a year for the final results!

Thank you Ronnie for kind comments. My personal feeling (as a plastic surgeon myself) is that it is important to stabilise on the medications first before undertaking any form of surgery. My surgeon Greg made it clear that he felt I should have at least been on them for a year before undergoing any transplant. It is amazing how valuable your remaining Hairs on your head are and we should at least try and hold on to them for as long as possible. I am no expert but I understand that the side effects of Finasteride can reduce over time or can be lessened with alternate day dosing. Also there are alternate medications and a topical version I think. I believe in medication so I have just started on oral minoxidil 2.5mg once daily today ! Let’s see what happens.!

Day 4 update . Slightly sore on the staple line as had FUT as numbness decreasing but manageable. Itching over last 2 nights so used an antihistamine tablet before bed. First hair cut booked for exactly 2 weeks after procedure at specialist barber near Harley Street who knows how to manage the FUT scar. I guess you can see my ridiculous hair style as the sides and back are long ….hopefully the religious monk look can be corrected!

Day 5 update. Still sleeping with neck pillow. Staples are uncomfortable despite pain killers but not the end of the world. washing carefully daily through a flannel but can’t wait to get directly wet in 2 days time. Here are some pictures under a window to show under bright light. Last day of saline mist spraying.
