Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a method of obtaining individual hairs/grafts from the donor area. A graft can contain anything from one to five hairs with one to three hairs being the norm.
A patients donor area will be shaven down exposing the hair as it leaves the scalp, then a circular punch is used to extract the graft, the punch rotates and enters the skin cutting away the tissue surrounding the graft, the graft is then carefully pulled out using extraction forceps. The grafts are then redistributed to the recipient area on the top of your head.
Punch sizes vary, 0.7 to 1.0 mm being the norm, some punches may exceed 1.0 mm.
There are three current extraction FUE methods.
1 - manual FUE, this is a hand held punch where the operator twists the punch between their fingers to create the rotating movement to cut through the skin tissue.
2 - powered FUE punch, this is similar to the manual punch however it has its own power supply which rotates the cutting edge and elimates the need of the operator to rotate it manually.
3 - robotic FUE, this is a robotic system such as the Artas that extracts the grafts via a computer enhanced grid of your donor area, the system is controlled by an operator.
