Fungal Infection Hair Loss

Hi, Ive come on here to ask anyone if they have experienced this? and also help to try and re grow my hair. About 6 months ago i got diagnosed with a fungal infection on my scalp. Symptoms were unbearable itchy scalp (actually kept me awake), severe dandruff, scabs on scalp and hair loss. Now the doctor prescribed me with Nizoral 2% shampoo (think it actually made my hair look ginger!) which got rid of the itching and most of the dandruff.

Now 6 months on I'm still experiencing hair loss, mostly in the shower or if i run my hands through my hair. I have never experienced hair loss until this fungal infection and i am now 25.

The hair loss isn't that noticeable at the moment but i want to halt it before it starts getting bad. Ive been back to the doctors recently and he basically said stop worrying but its scary when your losing tons of hair in the shower everyday. Shall i be more persistent and ask to be referred to a Dermatologist? My hair and scalp just doesn't feel right. Thanks and feedback would be brilliant,Billy

Hi Billy.

Its normal to shed 100 hairs a day although I don't know how much you are shedding. Nizoral can cause hair to shed. What shampoo do you use now as you may need a milder one.

Also if you could post a picture it would help a lot.

Regards Bm.

Hi bm,Thanks for your reply. I'm not entirely sure how many I am losing a day but I have never noticed this many before ever since the infection. I find them on my pillow, shoulders, when I style my hair etc.

I'll try and post pictures as soon as I can. I thought that infections only target certain areas of your hair but mine seems to be all over. The doctor did say it could take months to grow back but I'm just worried as I am still losing hair 6 months on. Also I have noticed I am experiencing sort of sharp pains around my hairline and random parts of my head.

Thanks Bill

Also have been using alpecin caffeine shampoo, don't know if it's actually doing anything but thought I would give it a go!

Not sure what could be causing the pains, it may be worth making your own appointment with a dermatologist if your doctor won't.
In my opinion the Alpecian shampoo does nothing for hair growth.

Yeah its probably doing nothing but ill try anything at the moment. Also most of the hair that falls out has this white ball stuck to it (not the bulb at the bottom) most of the time its just above the bulb. Ill try and post some pics as soon as i can. Seeing the doc again next week hopefully can persuade to refer me to a Dermatologist

My doctor has finally referred me to a Dermatologist. Was a different doctor this time and was very helpful. Also doing a blood test which is good. Back on the nizoral 2% to try and tackle it again, had major itch last night and scabs are back literally couldn't sleep until i went and had a cold shower to relieve it. I tried sleeping with coconut oil in my hair which made it worse i think. She said my hairloss almost definitely isn't hereditary as I've only experienced it since i got this infection so thats kind of a relief. Anyone else been through or going through this sort of thing? would be great to share some ideas how to tackle it.

Good to hear you've got an understanding doctor now who has recommended you to a Dermatologist.
Hopefully you kind find out the cause.
Good luck.
