When is the earliest and latest that transplanted hair will start maturing and thickening up??

Around the 8 month mark, you should notice the hair getting thicker with good overall density. Some patients may be a bit slower. It can take up to 18 months for the full effects of maturing but usually, the average is 12 months for final results.

I’m now coming up to 9 months Bigmac and am starting to notice the hair getting thicker. I’m trying to compare what a matured hair and a non matured hair looks like on my head but it’s not that easy with the naked eye

Basically, the non-mature hair is thinner and may not have taken on its normal characteristics. Thinner whispy or curled. If you search for hair growth cycle images you`ll see the different stages of growth.

Hairs have their own independent hair cycle. After a hair transplant, they go through different cycles of growth. The three growth stages are resting, shedding and growth. Usually, after three months the new hair will start to grow at varying stages. Transplanted hair can take anywhere between eight to twelve months to take on its natural characteristics. During this time, you need to be patient. As well as hair growing in and maturing you will have hairs going into their resing or shedding stages.

Thanks for the info Bigmac. I’m still finding my HT to be quite see through and thin in places. I’ve just been on YouTube and watched a load of HT result videos for 9 months and most of them Seem to be a lot thicker than mine.

It is hard when you see these others who have achieved what looks like their final results around 8 - 9 months but everyone is different. Hair characteristics play a part also.
It may be worth doing a video of your hair combing through it. It may give a better indication than pictures.
We can then take another look at the density.

I’ll certainly do that Bigmac. I will take videos and photos this Saturday and post here and in my documented progress thread

Was just doing a drum lesson and my student wanted to record themselves, she set the phone up ready and when I showed her the beat I could see myself in the camera. The strange thing was my hair looked a lot thinner and more see through than in my mirror at home. This is giving me the impression that the hair needs to become thicker allowing it to be picked up by the camera. What do you think Bigmac??

Yes, videos and cameras don`t always pick up the thinner hairs, especially when they are several feet away. Lighting conditions can also make it look thinner.
If you can, get your partner to video in natural daylight. Do a couple and compare them.

Here are some photos I took this morning. From close inspection and hopefully you can see in the photo that the hairs are still very thin and wirey but they are there, So once they thicken and mature it should make a big difference. I’ve also taken a video but how do I add that @Bigmac ??

There`s no way to upload the video directly to the forum. It would need uploading to Youtube or Vimeo first, then the link pasted on a post.
Something like Biotin or MSM may speed up the maturing of these thinner hairs.
It`s hard to see in the photos the thinner and wiry hairs. Cameras usually don`t pick these hairs up.

Ok I’ll upload it to a private link via YouTube and paste it here. The hairs are very curly in the marked section, which if I’m correct will straighten up as they mature and be more like the hair from my donor area. I spoke with the clinic yesterday who said everything looks normal and on track and I have lots of maturing to do yet, which was nice and reassuring

Yes, those hairs will thicken up, straighten out and end up as they were in the donor area.

It’s just a shame it`sgo slow for you but that’s the thing with a hair transplant, you just never know what your growth timelines are going to be. We know there are the usual averages for growth but there will always be exceptions with fast growth or slow growth.
Can you imagine if there were to be a spate of patients who never shed and had great results by month 4-5. Everyone would be thinking why can’t i have that, is there something wrong etc.
It`s good to hear the clinic are available for any follow questions you have and providing you with their support.

I don’t mind the wait for the end result, I just get these occasional days where I worry/doubt what the end result will be. Just like you say everyone heels and grows at different rates and it’s great to have this forum and the clinic reassuring me and explaining everything is normal and going as planned. If I have to wait 16-18 months to see the final result and it’s awesome it all worth it in my opinion. It’s way better than being bald and how being bald makes me feel

That is true. Your new grafts have already made a nice improvement with more expected.
The bald look does suit some people but i believe the majority will agree, hair makes you look and feel better, plus makes you look younger.
I’m glad the forum helps you.

When someone’s hair growth is slower, can new hairs still pop through after 9 months
