How long can grafts be kept out of the body

How long can grafts be kept out of the body before survival rates start to decrease significantly?

A patient has posted some details of his recent procedure due to some concerns on another forum. He had fue robotic procedure. On day one they made the extractions and the sites. They had him come back the next day to place the grafts so that was approximately 24 hours later. So 24 hours does sound possible keeping the grafts chilled. Researching after the fact the patient mentions a possible survivability rate of 80% which seemed to be written in a way where the concern level should have been higher in my opinion.

All these topics we discuss here on these forums. They are all debatable but in the end what most patients want to know is what is the best and not just what is good enough. It is up to the patient to find out for himself and not depend on what someone in a white coat is telling them. I €™m sure in this case the patient was told or just assumed placing the next day was normal and perhaps even a superior method, why else would it be performed in such a way.

Always cross reference what you learn over and over again is what I have found to be helpful regardless of the subject. Logic would tell me harvesting a organ and transplanting it as soon as possible would be the optimal approach and I don €™t need a medical degree to come to that conclusion. So why one must ask would someone wait until the next day? I think what you will find with most of these types of questions and answers is that it will lead you to one answer and that answer is money. What does it cost to do it the right way or in a way that is superior? Does it take more time in both the process and obtaining the skill level? Are the cost levels to the clinic higher? Or is it easier, faster and more profitable?


All of us here should have plenty of work experience by now. Do we take the necessary time to do our work in way that ends in a superior result or is it just good enough? This is cosmetic surgery, just good enough is not good enough.

Grafts if they are chilled can survive 24 hours. But the rule is that after 6-7 hours outside the body ,even if they are preserved in any solution, the survival rate start to decline.

I would not want my grafts left out for 24 hours, losing 20 per cent or more could add up to a lot of wasted donor.

Unless there's some emergency requiring the clinic to halt the operation, it just sounds like bad planning if they end up refrigerating the grafts for a day.

I wouldn't want mine out 24 hours either...to me it sounds like logic to plant them as soon as technically possible. I know its not the same thing and shouldn't really be used as a comparison but if you were unlucky enough to loose a limb then you wouldn't want to wait until the next day to try and re attach it.

As Ziggs says, unless some sort of emergency occurred I would not recommend this in my non medical opinion.

This research from Department of Dermatologic Surgery, Institute of Dermatology, Peking Union Medical College and Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Nanjing, PR China; and Laboratory Animal Center, Second Military Medical University of the People €™s Liberation Army, Shanghai, PR China shows that the rates of 96% of the hair follicles (preserved at 0 C Ringer's solution) and 92% of the follicles (preserved at 4 C Ringer's solution) decreased significantly in both groups after 24 hours; however, the rates in the 0 C group were higher than those in the 4 C group.
