January 2021 - 2844 grafts - Dr Arshad

Hi guys, thought I’d share my experience with the forum. This forum was a big part of me choosing the Hair Dr, and I won’t repeat what everyone else has said about Dr Arshad’s professionalism and that of the team generally.

I had my first consultation on 5th and booked in for 21st. We had originally gone for 2000 grafts, although as my forelock was thinning (see below, I think my hair was always styled well and thick, so only on closer examination did it look worse) and Dr Arshad thought that the donor area was really good, he suggested 2,500 and do the lot.

My day went as per everyone else’s experiences. It was a very long day, although flew by until the last couple of hours. I had been tentative about the injections although they were honestly fine. A bit of pain causing you to grit your teeth for a few seconds, although genuinely nothing to worry about and more than bearable.

One side of my head was more sensitive than the other as needed a few more anaesthetic and saline injections to my right side as could feel the punches slightly, although no real pain as such. Other than that the extraction process was surprisingly relaxing.

We stopped briefly for lunch and I think the anaesthetic and saline had made me a tad shaky, although didn’t feel too bad.

I found the strangest part the sound of the channelling, although there was no pain whatsoever. The afternoon was the technicians implanting, which was fine, I just watched tv and didn’t feel a thing.

When we were finished Dr A was really happy with the result and was happy with how tightly packed the grafts were, and they’d kindly given me around 350 extra.

I live about an hour and 20 mins away, and drove home feeling absolutely fine (although only my experience).

When I got home there was a lot of swelling above the bandages, and the recipient area was still a bit bloody, although no pain and got a solid 8 hours with the travel pillow.

Yesterday was day 2 and again a fair bit of swelling (including disconcertingly one ear sticking out!), although no pain whatsoever. The instructions sheet for meds provided is excellent, and another 8 hours sleep.

Woken up today and everything’s looking good I think, swelling’s right down And ear’s back where it should be!

below are photos pre-op styled, day 1 and day 2.

Thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences.

Hi Topdog.
Thanks for sharing your story, it sounds like everything went smoothly and you had a good experience..
It looks like you styled your hair in a frontal combover to hide your thinning frontal third. These 2000 grafts should make a nice difference.
Good to hear the swelling has gone down and your ear has moved back into position. Thinking back to one of my HT`s, my ear was misaligned because of some swelling on the side.
You`ll be 4 days post op now, the grats will be securely in place by tomorrow.
Has your sleep been ok?

Hi Bigmac, thanks for the reply. I’m a heavy sleeper so luckily I’ve had no problems at all sleeping right through. Looking forward until Thursday when I can stop with the travel pillow though!

Usually after the 4th night you can stop using a travel pillow. The donor should not be oozing by then and any swelling should be under control.
Always best to follow what your clinic tells you though.
I never used a travel pillow once except one time when I flew soon after surgery. I just pulled the pillows up and slept at a 45 degree angle.
Only a few more days to go for you.

Thanks BigMac. There’s no oozing. There is still a bit of forehead swelling (which tends to be worse in the evenings), although it’s certainly subsiding.

The transplanted hair seems to be growing. I assume this is normal and will still shed?

Sometimes a small percentage of people don’t shed the hair and it continues to grow.
Good to hear no oozing, the swelling should be gone soon.

Day 7 and had my first head wash! All coming along nicely I think. Recipient still scabbed over, although donor’s healing well. Roll on 6 months.

You can soaked the scalp now which will help with scab removal when you're massaging your scalp. A few more days and all the scabs should be gone.
Your donor area looks good.

How long did the forehead swelling last?

I’d it was pretty pronounced in the first 3 days, then it kind of drained down my face to in between and under my eyes. Completely gone by day 6. It wasn’t uncomfortable, just a bit unsightly. I did have a lot of anaesthetic and saline though as could feel the punching on my right side (didn’t hurt, could just still feel it).

Thank you so much for this prompt response. Im going this same cycyle myself so wanted to have a rough idea of what to expect

Hopefully should be within the same period as you

No worries at all. The last effects of it were a tiny bit of yellow bruising beneath my eyes which lasted for a couple of days. I’m at 9 days now and all swelling gone. A couple of days makes a massive difference.

Day 11

Really happy with the donor. Think the recipient is looking good too, still lots of crusting although I’m reluctant to be too vigorous when shampooing as a few hairs have come out with the crusts.

Really wish I’d shaved the lot now. Thought I’d be able to disguise it, although in reality a shaved head doesn’t look terrible (especially with at this stage a temporarily good hair line!).

It looks like you`ve healed well. Those last few lingering scabs will come off in their own time. Try letting the shampoo soak in for ten minutes before massaging and washing off. Any hairs attached to scabs at this stage is nothing to worry about, it`s all part and parcel of the healing process.
Looking at your transplanted hairline gives you a feel good factor of knowing what's to come.
