Latest hair loss/First visit with "actual" dermatologist---Input??

Hi there!
To start off with the latest with my hair loss, I finally got in with an "actual dermatologist" for the first time today. I will refer to the place without the extra training to become a dermatologist as the dermatology clinic and the person with extra training as the dermatologist or she. I am confused because some of the advice she is dispensing is contrary to general advice I got and different than some of advice I got from a "dermatology clinic". I would like to hear about any experiences or opinions people have about any of the treatments or tips I will talk about.

The dermatologist thought that I had chronic telogen effluvium instead of androgenic alopecia. She also stated that I had moderate to severe eczema on my scalp; and thought that a lot of my hair loss was caused by this. The dermatologist prescribed clobetasol .05% scalp solution to use daily. She recommended alternating between three different *shampoos: one containing salicylic acid, head and shoulders, and ketonazole, along with a gentle conditioner on the ends. I was already using the ketonazole, which was recommended to me by the dermatology clinic and my general physician. Note: She is interested in seeing the report of the scalp biopsy when the dermatology clinic determined I had androgenic alopecia. The dermatologist doesn't think I have the hair loss pattern for androgenic alopecia.

Here is what I am questioning: 1)The dermatologist says I need to wash my hair as often as possible because less hair washing will make my condition worse. I have been told by so many people not to wash my hair too often. Note: I have typically been washing my hair twice a week. 2) Another piece of advice I am questioning is using taking 1/4 minoxidil tablet daily 2.5mg. She told me this is a very low dose of minoxidil; and it is possible I could lose hair if I went off it. I don't want to become dependent on it. So maybe it is a low risk treatment for hair loss? 3) Her opinion of my latest hair loss. She didn't agree with that using minoxidil foam could stop hair loss in 24 hours. Here's what happened: I used a clarifying shampoo that caused me to lose almost 80 hair in about an hour, and then started to losing hair in groups of 10 from a section of my head. At first it was once in a day and increased to about 4-5 of these sections with clumps of hair falling on the floor. I took minoxidil at the recommendation of the dermatology clinic and the hair loss stopped. The dermatologist insisted that that wasn't the cause and that it takes three months to see any benefits. (Note: I failed to let the foam dry as recommended before going to bed and lost a clump the next day). She also said the minoxidil foam was terrible for my hair and to stop.

PS. It feels like the "best solution" for hair loss for a person is somewhat random. I'm not (as happy) with my hair as I like to be. However, it is scary trying new things or even the same things as different times. It sometimes makes things worse..............Thanks for reading! =)

Conflicting advice will have you questioning what you`re being told. It is true that if you decide to ditch minoxidil you could possibly lose hair that was dependent on it. Did you have any form of scalp condition/irritation before using it?

From what I understood, the dermatologist said that I may or may not lose hair if I stopped taking the minoxidil. I think this is because the dose is so low. Also, I am unclear what you are referring to when you ask if I had a form of a scalp condition irritation before using it. By it, did you mean the clarifying shampoo or the minoxidil foam? Either way, the answer is yes. I have had bad dandruff and/or eczema on my scalp for at least a year and it has gotten worse.

Is it ok to put on minoxidil foam if just took .625mg of it in tablet form? My hair is falling out like *crazy again; so I did this. I just took my first tablet tonight. I am thinking of talking to the dermatologist about this and leave out the fact that I used the foam again. She actually got emotional when I tried to describe what happened when I took the foam at my appointment.................Any thoughts? If I don't get a response I may post this as a separate thread.

*I haven't "combed" my hair with my fingers in a couple of days. However, I found 20 hairs tangled up on my left side and ten on my right. And I can see multiple hairs coming out from a sections in my hair. Note: I washed my hair using Selson Blue shampoo tonight; which is the third shampoo in my rotation of shampoos.

A pharmacist told me that if my hair loss is due to the eczema, then I would retain my hair after stopping the minoxidil. Has anyone else been told this or think this is the case?
