Thought it might be fun to add some myths regarding hair loss. Which ones do you know aren't true? Ill start with a few. Please feel free to add yours as it would be interesting to see them on one thread.

1. There is nothing you can do about hair loss (this myth gets me as my dad told me this over and over again when i was younger)

While it €™s true that hair loss is common and we €™ve yet to find a cure for it, that doesn €™t mean there €™s nothing you can do. There are a number of ways to enhance the hair you have and techniques to prevent future hair loss. For example, there are two FDA-approved drugs to treat hair loss; Minoxidil (Rogaine) and Finasteride (Propecia). In addition, there are also surgical solutions, such as hair transplants and other options like SMP.

2. Wearing a Hat will cause Baldness.

It €™s a common idea that wearing a hat will lead to hair loss. This is based on the concept that a hat will put extra strain on your follicles, leading to extra loss. Hats cause no harm to your head, except if they are especially dirty. Then they may cause an infection. You should probably be more concerned about your hair style than whether you're going to lose hair from a hat.

3. Hair loss is a male problem.

While hair loss is far more common among men, the problem also affects a large number of women. Hair loss in women may be caused by several reasons, varying from genetics to medical conditions such as pregnancy, thyroid disorders, and anemia. Hair loss in women can also be caused by certain hair styles, such as tight cornrows or damage caused by chemical treatments.

4. We get our hairloss gene from our mother's side of the family.

Absolutely untrue, as I see in my own family. My mother's side has NW3A loss at most, while my Father's side of the family has NW6 and NW7's throughout. The truth is it can and does come from both sides, or either side, and there is no rhyme or reason for it.

As a side note, in my experience I believe that the more you look like one side of your family the more likely you are to have that side of the family's hairloss traits as well. Again, my own family reflects this as my younger brother looks more like my Mother's side of the family and he too has a NW3A pattern developing while I look much more like my Father's side of the family and you know how that turned out:) I started noticing this years ago in patients and I believe it is true in the majority of cases.

Hair loss only happens with age.

We may associate hair loss with the elderly, but nearly a quarter of all men that experience hair loss will first notice signs of the problem in their early 20s. Unfortunately it's thought that the earlier that hair loss begins, the more severe it is likely to be(although this isn't always the case).

Interesting. I'm one of four brothers and am often told I look the most like my Dad. He was bald, as was his father. And despite being the second youngest of the four of us, I have the most extensive hair loss. My younger brother (about to turn 40) more resembles my Mum's side of the family and has no loss at all.

Now that you've noticed this in yourself you'll remember it during your consultations. You'll start to see the pattern unfurl and while it's not perfect it is, in my opinion, a strong indicator to add during your initial assessments. After I noticed this about ten years ago I feel the accuracy is about 75% minimum.

Has anyone heard that height can have a an affect on men loosing their hair. According to this Doctor (who frankly does my head in) he says in a video half way down the page that new research in Germany has found that shorter men are more likely to loose their hair*nl

Sounds absurd to me and the article itself had some stupid comments in it regarding the use of Finasteride. The part that says if your going to use it then seek erectile dysfunction treatment first....whats that all about*nl

I recall a hairloss forum on regrowth around 1999-2002 where some members were rubbing urine on their heads daily. Actively encouraged no doubt by certain members being pranksters. Some were even giving 2-3 month updates and asking questions in regards to the Color of the urine they were using. I never tried this treatment plan but there were no reported side effects from memory if anyone wants to try this ridiculous plan. Very affordable too.

I recall reading somewhere online about rubbing horse urine on your scalp and the old hang upside down so the blood rushes to your head.

I bought a book advertised in The Sun back in the nineties that promised a miracle cure which turned out to be nothing more miraculous than the hanging upside down idea. Tried it for a few days but all I got from it was serious headache.

4. Tanning will make your hair off: Laying in a son is the cause of hair loss is a one of myth. But it's not true blood circulation on hair follicles are function as regular. There is not any kind of change appears in blood circulations.

It is interesting that you have mentioned certain things related to erectile dysfunction and hair loss treatment medicines. In a recent study a lot has been revealed regarding the relation between the two. Men with longer exposure to the drugs finasteride and dutasteride have a higher risk of persistent erectile dysfunction than do men with less exposure, a new study suggests. The persistent erectile dysfunction continued despite stopping these drugs, in some cases for months or years. Men around the world need to be very careful while having medicines for hair loss as they could prove to be risky.

There are many myths related to hair loss. Many of them you all have listed. another one is:
You are going to bald because you are stressed: Stress does cause hair loss but it is temporary. Your hair starts regrowing after you overcome with the situation causing stress.

What causes hair loss?
I understand one thing is genetics. My brother lost a significant amount of hair from the ages 19-23. I am 18 and now going through the same thing. I want to at least attempt to stop it before it gets worse. What is the science behind hair loss? Also, is there any natural way to prevent it?

Your best chance of halting your hair loss is with Finasteride. Unfortunately there are no proven effective natural treatments available.
