Is Oil The Solution or The Problem? It depends.

Often, when we observe dryness, flakes, and itchiness on our scalp, we tend to make the mistake of applying oils as a remedy. This trend is particularly prevalent in the African American community.

However, what many people fail to realize is that this approach can actually worsen the condition. Our bodies naturally produce oil, and when the natural oil on our scalp is combined with excessive hair products, it can create problems for our hair. When there is too much oil on the scalp, your scalp will naturally begin to produce sebum in an attempt to calm things down. Unfortunately, this leads to an accumulation of excess build-up on the scalp and within the hair follicles, which can result in more severe conditions like inflammation.

So, I believe that when you experience a dry and itchy scalp, the best course of action is to shampoo your hair. After shampooing, you can apply a small amount of oil to your scalp, but it's important not to overdo it.

If you notice some dryness and itchiness a few days after applying the oil, it's better to wash your hair again instead of adding more oil. By doing this, you are training your scalp to become accustomed to regular washing routines, which can help maintain a healthier scalp.

Yes, for someone who suffers from a dry, flaky, or itchy scalp, then in those cases, excess oil could be the culprit.
