Hi, I'm a 32yo male from NW England who's started having issues with thinning on the top during the last eight months or so (neatly coinciding with the outbreak of the virus and WFH period actually, giving me loads of time to neurotically obsess about the matter around the house )

I don't think it's *too* noticeable to others at this stage, but definitely seems to be heading in that direction, I'm getting lots of shedding anytime I come out the shower or try to gel my hair, and strangely it seems to be more noticeable the more my hair grows in after a haircut.

Anyway, I'm at a stage where I'd definitely like to do something about it if possible, I'm just not sure what. I've done a lot of research, and while there seems to be lots of positive before/after stories out there, there are also lots of scare stories about side-effects. (I should say, I definitely can't afford a transplant, so we're talking finasteride/minoxidil or a combination of the two)

The two main options as far as ordering off the internet go seem to be like Sons.co.uk and Numan.com, both of which are doing prominent advertising campaigns on TV at the moment. Can anyone advise which of these actually provides the better service? The other main thing I'm looking to establish here is, some people seem to use finasteride on its own, but then you read through the Sons website and most of their packages involve finasteride, minoxidil, biotin vitamins AND a special shampoo... I'll be honest, that sounds like a pain in the arse of a regime to maintain, I don't really want that amount of mad scientist's kit lying around the flat for any visitors to see, and cost is also an issue, considering some of these plans cost north of £30 a month and you need to do it for more than six months to start seeing results. Is there any real difference results-wise between just using finasteride on its own or going down the bells + whistles route?

Sorry, this is an extremely rambling first post, but there are some maintenance Qs I should also ask while I'm here. How often should you wash your hair when in the early stages of hair loss, and are there any products you should/shouldn't use? I've basically been adopting a highly unscientific HANDS OFF policy - washing it less, only using shampoo once or twice a week, trying to fiddle around with it less during the day. My barber also advised to me start using a styling powder instead of styling wax because that supposedly yanks less hairs out when you're styling it, but if anything it seemed to cause MORE shedding the first couple of times I used it, so at the moment I'm resorting to just putting a tiny bit of water on in the mornings then combing it a bit.

Any and all advice appreciated here, folks, I'm casting more than my nan's golden retriever over here (y)

I couldn’t keep up a routine of taking loads of pills and rubbing positions in to my hair, and I like you obsessed over losing my hair. There are defo cheaper places than the 2 you mention in your post, one being Dr Fox. I’m on Finasteride after my HT and plan to continue this forever really to keep my existing hair as well as the transplanted hair. I tried the caffeine shampoos for many years and my honest opinion is it done bugger all to halt or slow down my hair loss just a gimmick target people like us who don’t want to go bald. I would defo look in to finasteride and minoxidil as these seem to be proven solution not just gimmicks.

Finasteride is your best option as long as you know and accept the possible side effects. Shampoos don`t prevent hair loss. Biotin only helps to promote hair growth quicker but it doesn`t work for everyone.
You could read this short thread and check out the online pharmacy mentioned.

nice one, thanks for that. If I go with Finasteride alone as a solution I guess it doesn't matter where I get it from, as the tablets you'd get from Sons or Numan or whoever would maybe be packaged different but exactly the same?

You need it from a reputable source as there are counterfeit meds out there. Some people claim the generic versions did not work for them but the brand name Propecia did. I have used Proscar first, then switched to Finasteride. I`ve been using Finasteride 13 plus years now. It seems to be still working.

Didn’t assume you were an ignoramus at all, just thought you had misunderstood that Dr Fox was a supplier of meds and not a Hair transplant Physician. Never assume anyone is an ignoramus at all bud, not my nature pal......my mistake if it came across as such.

I thought the title read Sons of Numan. My first thoughts were that's a strange name for a pharmacy or drug store. Then my thoughts turned to devil cults and biker gangs. I could see you rocking up to the menacing looking biker asking for your fix of Finasteride. It was on,y when I looked at the title again I realized my error.
Reading the post it is easy to see why the name Dr. Fox could lead to confusion.
