Why do crowns take longer to grow in after a HT, What’s the science behind this??

My opinion on the growth in the crown is that transplanted hairs don't necessarily take longer to regrow than anywhere else on the head.
I know that I myself have given advice in the past when a patient is worried about crown growth is to wait beyond the 12 months after surgery to achieve their results. I believe the transplanted hairs in the crown need to mature and thicken before the hairs are noticed compared to other parts of the head, mainly because the graft placement tends to be slightly less in the crown than at the hairline. I also believe that there may be less likelihood of being able to appreciate the shingling effect in the crown as well.

Thank you Janna. I’m nearly at 11 months post HT and I can feel very small, stubbly hair in my crown plus my hairdresser mentioned yesterday that I have quite a few wiry, unmatured hairs in the crown at the moment.

Some hair transplant patients do report slower growth in the crown when comparing the growth they experience in the hairline or frontal half areas. All hair can grow at different rates. Just like one side can grow in faster than the other.
Getting coverage in the crown is more difficult than the rest of the scalp because the hair goes in different directions, unlike the frontal half where the majority all go in the same direction. The hair in the crown may be growing at a similar pace but the visual effect takes longer than other areas.
This is why you will hear many doctors say full maturity can take up to 18 months.
Slow growers/delayed growth for whatever reasons does happen in some patients.

Many patients report that they see a much smaller growth rate on the crown area. My opinion is the blood circulation on the crown area of the scalp is much less than the other areas. That is why the growth rate on the crown is less than the other areas of the scalp. For our local patients we are also applying 4 PRP sessions after hair transplant (mostly on crown) to increase the growth rate.
