25yr old thinning/going bald...

hi, i'm a 25yr old male from england. when i was about 13 or 14 i started growing my hair out, and ive had it long ever since. about 2 years ago, i trimmed it down from its longest length, (about halfway down my back) to just above shoulder length, and that's how it is now.
i've never even thought about the possibility of balding, until, and as silly as this sounds, a woman at the gym said to she didn't think it was me down in the car park when she saw the balding spot until i looked upwards. (i was really P.O'd at the the way this came out to be honest) and since then i've noticed that its true. the crown of my head (and according to my mother i have a double crown...whatever that means) is really thinning, i can't really cover it up, even with long hair, as i can't get it right, and i'm not doing a bloody comb over. a for my temples, i've not really noticed it as i have the long hair, but i reckon the temples are receding a bit, don't really have anything to compare it to to be honest. its really bugging me now, CANNOT stop thinking about it, and i just don't know what to do. i don't fancy the propecia route, as i don't really want to run the risk of it messing with my 'gentlemen vegetables', i would go the regain route, but its just too damn expensive.
i've bought some alpecin caffeine shampoo, its SUPPOSED to promote hair growth from the roots. only had 3 days so obviously it hasn't done anything yet, but to be fair, i'm very skeptical of a shampoo actually being able to do any good. so, what i'm asking is, does anyone have any advice. am i a lost cause, and resign myself for the bruce willis look, or is there something i can do. i really don't want to do it, as i really like the rocker look, the long hair, but if need be, i will get it cut. no way in hell am i shaving it, so it's one uniform length all over, and im not doing the buzz cut, (or short back and sides as we call it over here) but i will have it what i would consider short in a 'fashionable style'. so does anyone have any ideas for shorter styles please? thanks in advance for any help.

sorry for the low res pictures, had to use my phone.

I know you said you dont want to try propecia as I was like that at first but then realised without a dht blocker of some sort you are doomed and rogaine will not stop you loosing it on its own.DHT is the primary killer so lowering that is essential if you want to keep what you have. I only take .5mg a day and that is all I need for it to work as the dose curve is pretty flat. even .5 every other day worked for me after 2 years and I am just experimenting at moment to c if every day gives any additional growth after another 6 months (only 6 weeks in),if not I will go back to EOD. It works well on the crown too. Forget the caffeine shampoo, just a gimmick as it wont stop your hair follicle from being diminished by DHT if it is genetically predisposed to be.Try Revita shampoo though as it has keto in it.

I echo what tc said,.5mg propecia eod,rogaine foam which works trust me-twice a day,nizoral shampoo 2-3 times a wk.

Nanogen concealer will be a short term fix hiding the problem, also may be shorter hair around the back at sides might draw less attention to the thinning crown, longer hair makes thinning look worse.

How are you getting on with the shampoo, did you try Propecia in the end.

Cheers Bm.

Great advice from the guys, i agree that the shampoo alone won't do any good if you have MPB. Some guys like Saw palmetto the herb (natural)on here as an alternative to the Propecia, but this still lowers DHT and is not a clinically proven answer, personally i prefer the propecia/finasteride route as it is proven to do what it says...........just a thought dude.

Let us know how you got on, good luck;)

I think the question more is why is it acceptable for a anybody to make a light hearted joke about hairloss? This is what gets me , if you had said something like i did not recognize you as you got real fat, or f**k me your teeth are piss yellow green she would of been real upset, so i wasnt sure it was you..But its ok to take the piss on hairloss..

If i were you grow a goatee , get a good short clipper cut at the barbers . Taking the hair short will blend it in with the thinning areas. Once its done you get used to it very quickly..
Accepting hairloss takes a while but its a fact of life, it will also prevent you from making wrong decisions ..

Yea, I bought the laser thingy 9 months ago too, and have also seen some excellent results. As you can see, it has also cured my albino condition.

Sure bigmac, but I have to be careful as the moderator of this site is a real strict killjoy, and doesn't allow links.
It's w w w laserthingy . co .uk (see how clever I am ?)

I hear these lazer whatsits shrink your penis to the size of a flea.could you comment?

I remember someone making a comment about my hair years ago too.it still pops into my head every now and then, but for the most part they just dont realise what their saying.it seems acceptable to call someone up on their hairloss but as mentioned woe betide anyone who mentions a persons weight!.

Hi md8532,
The thing that Propecia causes sexual side effects confuses all men. But I €™d like to tell that we are different and respond differently to medications being it finasteride or something else. One man can suffer from adverse effects, another not. For one the drug could be effective, for another not. Therefore, it is worth to try to see if it works for you. Anyway, if you start noticing any side effects it is always possible to stop the treatment.
I €™ve been experiencing the same confusion before starting taking finasteride, however I decided to risk and I €™m happy with my choice as the shedding has stopped in 4 months. The only side effect I've experienced was a mild dizziness at the beginning of the treatment.
As about the alternative treatments, so I €™ve tried herbal shampoos, home remedies etc, but I just wasted my time and money without getting any results.
