Dear forum readers,
This case should bring into perspective that progression of MPB after first hair transplant can necessitate further sessions.

An oft discussed topic on the forums is -
When should a person undergo hair transplant?

1. When he has had most of the hairloss he would probably go through (based on family history)?

2. When he is post 35 years of age?

----------------------------------------------------------------------

I do not completely agree with the above 2 options listed because they do not include the most important factor in a hair transplant - that is the patient.

My 2 requirements before deciding to take up a patient are -

1. Awareness level of the patient irrespective of age

2. Donor hair resources (given the modern techniques).

If the patient has sufficient donor hair for future procedures and is well aware of possible future HT sessions, I would not punish him just because he is young.

-----------------------------------------------------------
A38 is in the entertainment industry and had he waited to turn a NW 5 before getting any HT, he (in his own words) would have lost many opportunities.

His first HT was helpful for these past years. Now, he feels he has need of another session to fill the balding spots behind the 1st hair transplant.

I hope this will help future doctors and readers make educated decision.

Please let me know if you have any queries.
Regards,
Dr. A

Dr Arvind, would preventative medications be a deciding factor in your decision making?

Dear Aafreen,
Preventive medication would have been a deciding factor if it had a high degree of success.
Given its limited benefits coupled with possible side effects, I feel medication should be an option for the patient to decide - not a forced precondition.
