At what Norwood level would you start Propecia?

Hello Everyone.

I`m new here just wanting some advice.

As the title say`s..... At what Norwood level would you consider using Propecia or Finasteide ?

Would You wait to see how your hair will progress? Or would you start now to catch it early?

My hairline has the appearance of really thick hair, however in the temples it has receded.... It`s worse on the left side at present.... I`d be happy though if it stayed at the level I`m at now with no further loss.

There is the side effects to be taken into consideration also.... Are they were the risk or not?

You answer your own question to a good degree. You are happy with your situation now, so why not use meditations. Side effects; you should talk to whoever prescribes them to you, all meds have side effects, some good some possibly bad.
IF your hair loss is relatively minimal and you wish to retain as much of your native hair as possible the meds can possibly help. Do a little more searching as it is very personal to you.

It depends what age your are and if you suspect from looking at older family relatives how far your hair loss will progress. Temple recession to some degree happens to everyone and is part of maturing.

If you are noticing thinning throughout the mid scalp and crown then you should give it some serious thought and speak to your GP. If you see no other thinning at this stage other than temple recession then I would not be taking a medication that I was unsure would be any benefit to me.

Prevention is of course better than cure but I think to warrant taking a medication like Propecia you need to at least see some more signs. If you want to put some photos up I will give you my opinion.

I`m only thinning in the temple corners at present which if stays as is will be fine.... I`m concerned it`s just the beginning of what is to come.

I`ll be 21 next week.... my father has a bald crown, both grand fathers had full heads of hair.

If I try medications... could they accelerate hair loss? And what happens if you take them but continue to lose hair?

At 21 you are young; this could simply be a natural change in your hair and nothing to do with male pattern baldness; this is normal around your age for changes to occur.


Medications, minox, finasteride have side effects, and you should read up to understand them. You may see more hair fall initially but this calms down, they will not accelerate hair loss though. Any approved meds take time to show how well they may work for you, they need to be used correctly and for about 12 months before you can really judge how effective they have been.

Welcome dude, good question you raised, if i were in your shoes and you are currently happy, then i would wait until i saw things starting to thin in places other than just the temples as it could just be your hairline maturing like the others have said. The problem i see is that meds are a big commitment and you really need to establish that you are infact loosing your hair first or you will never know because you wont want to stop incase you are and the meds are working..... obviously this is without evrn considering the possible sides dude.

Hi there,
Some great advice offered by the members, it does sound like your hair line is maturing as you age. This will happen to most men. If you are still concerned you could possibly have your hair checked by a Dermatologist or Hair Transplant doctor to see if there is any miniturization.
This could possibly answer your question as to whether it's appropriate to try Finasteride and Rogaine sooner rather than later.

I'm still undecided on what to do...... Taking Finasteride seems the obvious choice but the loss of libido is worrying. How common is loss of libido in young guys who take Finasteride?
If it's a very low percentage I think I will try it.

I think the manufacturers during clinical trials stated that 2% of trial participants reported sexual side effects. From my own research I think this 2% figure is higher. As others have stated research the risks.

Many people have stabilised their hair loss on Finasteride, however it does not work for everyone.

2% is rather low considering how many people have issues with other medications such as Aspirin.... I'm leaning towards going for it.
Out of curiosity is there an estimated figure on how many guys are using it?
