Its a laser hood, i sat under it for 30 minutes at SMG to see what it was like.
They let their patients use it free of charge if they want to try it out.

Yea it is, its like one of those old fashioned hairdryers you saw women sitting under.
Some people do say they have had growth using them, however i would not pay for that treatment.

This is interesting. Do SMG believe that lasers can be beneficial, and are simply being generous with their unit, or was it something they decided to try out, decided didn't work, but allow patients to make use of it anyway? It could have experimental value to treat as wide a range of people as possible with it, and as it isn't harmful then why not?

We leased the laser machine couple of years ago but recognized that it really is quite the hassle for most patients to come in 2-3 times a week so we never charged for them to try it.
Coincidentally, we actually have a woman who is sitting under it right now. She has consistently sat under it for 20 minutes once a week for about a year. Her opinion is that it's definately strengthened her existing hairs, regrew some new hairs and makes her hair grow faster. Unfortunately, we don't have before and after pics because she started out at another clinic that folded so she started coming to our clinic about 1/2 a year ago.

A lot of people try it and see no results, and a lot of reputable doctors insist that it's a bit of a scam, so my opinion has formed along those lines. Personally I advise people not to bother (and I'll have to continue doing that until there is solid proof to the contrary) but I'd welcome being wrong, and if the sessions are free of charge then no one can call it a scam.
Perhaps a massive treatment time is needed. More time than is really practical or cost effective.

I know what you mean about not seeing any results. It's the main reason why we didn't want to charge patients trying it. My thoughts on the laser were in line with your thoughts too. However, in the last couple of years, studies are showing new growth with lasers. The combs weren't effective enough but the caps seem better.
The lady I spoke to couple of days ago is the only one who consistently came in while others gave up after a month or two. They probably gave up too soon but it's understandable that it's a hassle. And then we weren't pushing or recommending it to anyone since we weren't able to get any feedback from it till now.
There's a prominent Dermatolgist at the University of Minnesota whom we highly respect just did an independent study on the laser caps. Her findings are very positive from what I hear. We just need to get our hands on the study itself now so we can share it.
