Carbs and Hairloss

Does anyone think there is a link between a high carb diet and hairloss?

I have seen this discussed on forums over the years with varying opinions. The general belief of the "yes" camp is that high carb intake results in an insulin spike which causes inflammation which can in turn exacerbate hairloss along with DHT. The "no" camp basically say that MPB is unrelated to diet. I may have oversimplified this but its just to give an indication of the two lines of thought.

My opinion leans towards the "yes" camp. While I do beleive that DHT is the main cause of MPB and I will always take Finasteride until something better comes along, I also beleive that there are circumstances that can greaten or lessen its effect.

My diet was awful and consisted mostly of carbs. About 2 months ago I decided to cut down on my carb intake as I felt I looked bloated facially in particular. A couple of others mentioned it as well so that served as an added catalyst. I am not on a extreme low carb diet such as Atkins, I am just being a bit more sensible about what I eat. In this time I feel my face gets less bloated and greasy, I sweat less and my scalp itches less and smells less.

This could of course be totally unrelated but I just thought I would throw it out there for discussion.

I'm really interested to hear what people think about diet, and in particular carbs, and hairloss.

I think that some people are affected by carbs but they are in the minority, it does no harm to try different food regimes to see how you feel and maybe discover if hairloss is linked to your own dietry cocumption.

Maybe we can have a list of what people think are good foods to eat, i know Topcat has good advice on food intake.

Yeah would be good to get Topcats' thoughts on this.

I forgot to add in the original post that I know some diabetes sufferers who have thinned out in MPB areas and the donor area as well. Diabetes of course has a link with insulin and its behaviour.

Further to this, Diabetes type 2 sufferes have recently been put on a strict diet for a period of months which has been able to control the illness. Links below.

Diabetes Diet for Type 2

I don't want people to think I am getting carried away with this. I genuinely do not know enough about the medical links, if there are any at all.

The purpose of this is just to post my thoughts and maybe learn more for and against my view on the subject.

About 10 % of individuals on carb exclusion diets encounter hair loss, perhaps as a result of insufficient nutrients such as B vitamins and silica. Some think that the 'stress €™ of ketosis causes hair loss.
