Could defective Gene`s cause early hair loss?

There seem to be more young people affected by hair loss these days than ever before. One possible theory is defective or mutated Gene`s that cause the hair follicle to die before their time.
An interesting article I`ve just read online quotes short men are more likely to go bald. Our genetic makeup determines how tall we grow, this may have some relevance to this theory.
