Hi Janna,

My situation is similar to this patient, although not quite as severe. I would like to know how wide of a strip can safely be removed in a resection case? Also what are the ratio`s of scar stretch in this area compared to the notmal donor harvesting site?

On the outcome of the above case, simply put "fantastic"

Thanks Sorelle.

Dr. Shapiro will opt for a resection if and only if it's appropriate. The preferred method is to do punch out sessions and graft around existing hairs because there are more complications to resections.

The main critieria for a resection is when the plugs are placed too low in a hairline. And the patient lives so far away that it would take too many sessions and time to punch out all the grafts properly. I'd estimate that the strip sizes of the resections are approximately .5cm in width. I have yet to see any of the resection scars stretch. The patients have to stay local for at least 10 days after surgery and be seen everyday to make sure the healing is progressing as it should.

Janna,
Why were 5000 grafts used for the hairline area alone, seems very high. However the end result is a complete turnaround.

West coaster,

Not all 5300 grafts went into the hairline or even the frontal third zone. He ended up having the frontal half of his head addressed due to diffused thinning.
We should have clarified in the case breakdown that only the first two repair sessions addressed the hairline. The main purpose of the last two sessions were for repairing his old donor scars in the back and addressing the central zone and top of crown. His hairloss had progressed to a diffused NW 5. The last two sessions were 7 & 8 years after the resection. During the 3rd and 4th sessions, the patient got a little bit of the total grafts to the hairline but majority of the grafts went to the diffused thinning areas.

Sorry for the confusion.
