Each clinic offering different advice

I've recently sent online consultations to a couple of reputable clinics and they both said different treatments were needed.

Clinic one said they could do a FUE with 2500 grafts.

Clinic two said it would take 3500 grafts and said i'd need strip surgery.

Anyone else experience this? Any reason for them to be so different?

Some clinics only perform FUE and some only perform strip. Of course it would be to their advantage to suggest what they offer. A clinic that offers both would be in a better position to suggest what might be better depending on your expectations.

As far as numbers are concerned it could be as simple as one clinic achieving a denser result or a more natural looking hairline which would consume a higher number of grafts. Maybe one doctor prefers to plant further into the thinning areas to prevent a gap to early on as your hair loss might continue or maybe one clinic doesn €™t achieve as high a yield. It could be for many other reasons. Go back to the clinics and as for an explanation, it €™s as simple as that.

I guess i should ask more questions. Both just said how much grafts it would take and how much it would cost.

I suppose it's up to me to get all the information from them instead of them just telling me.

I thought both evaluations were very different, though.

Jessop you should ask questions to understand exactly what is going to be performed and why a specific approach is better than another. But it also helps to be able to have some level of trust in the skills and ethics of the clinic itself. That can only come with time through speaking with others along with reading about their experiences.

Any pictures? Did they draw a hairline to show where the grafts will go? I was in the same boat as you. 1 doc saying 2000, another saying 4000. I went back to ask for the difference. The hairlines both were planning were very different. The one saying 4000 will have needed that many hair given the hairline.

Jessop, first you should decide if you would want to go the strip route, then take it from there. If strip is ok for you then it does give more options perhaps, can amintain donor area density at the expense of area, though it all depends on your donor area, laxity etc etc.

FUE is more popular now with good reason but it is your choice.

Both approaches are all about density, both of the donor area and the transplanted area. It is the doctors appraisal of these factors and his skill and experience that dictates the outcome.

Also most people say they want a 'conservative approach' but when talking through things we almost always want more! This has to be weighed against over-use of your own personal 'donor bank'.
After all this is all about moving hair not producing new.

It depends on the area they were planning to transplant, were they both the same.

Concerning hair loss issue, I was fighting with this, too. I tried a lot of things, I spent a lot of money and still after all that, nothing really happened, nothing had changed...
But, one day, I found on the internet, more specifically, on this website, some products that helped me out, they have also products who treats hair loss in women cases, my sister had this problem too.

I have experienced that too. I think it could be due to the following reasons:

1) Amount of area each surgeon intends to work on
2) Density of the region

Depending on your age (younger people sometimes prefer denser work esp at the hairline), potential for further loss (look at your older relatives for an idea), and what you are doing to maintain (finasteride, etc), are all factors to be considered in which way you go.

If your older relatives have severe hairloss, you should go for strip from a good surgeon, or FUE from only a top surgeon. Transection rates are typically higher in FUE procedures, strip procedures have a greater success percentage, for this reason I say good strip surgeon or only top notch fue surgeon.
