I’ve been considering a transplant for a few years now and I could use some input in trying to decide the right surgeon for me. I’m now in my early 50s and ready to take the plunge.
My Hair Loss Summary: I started losing hair at 17 and took topical Min and oral Fin for about 7 years before switching to oral Dut and oral Min over 3 years ago. My hair loss is not as stable as it was in my 30s/40s so I’m likely on my way to a NW6.
My Preferences: I’m open to FUE or FUT and I’m open to travel outside of the US to wherever I’m the best match for the best possible outcome. I also want to keep the hairline high/mature so I’m conservative when it comes to hairline. My preference is density in frontal third and mid-scalp (naturalness better than hairline for me as I don’t plan on slicking my hair back).
My Challenge: After going through various websites and forums over the years, I have realized that some doctors are really good at hair lines, some good at density, some better at higher norwoods, while others prefer to stay at 2500 or less. Some are FUE only and some do both FUE and FUT. Some use forceps, some and others use DHI. I don’t think there is a right or wrong with any of that (to each their own) but now that I’m learning more about what each doctor does, some of my initial favorites are no longer a good match for me. I have had a few consultations in the US where I reside and all determined I would need between 3500-4000 grafts. Dr Mittal, Ball and Muresanu were some of my faves but all are more conservative and although they can, they don’t like to perform the 3500-4000 range. Dr. Miln uses forceps which makes me a little nervous. Dr. Ratchathorn and Dr. Patty both seem good but I wonder if they specialize more in Asian hair type (mine is more wavy/course). When I consider doctors within the US, I don’t see as many good results, however that may be related to them limiting how much social media is used. Ideally, I’d love to go somewhere that actually measures donor zone hair. The few consultations I had within the US did not do that. They viewed with eyes and ran fingers through and said good candidate but no idea of how many available grafts.
