Hello everyone,

My first post here. I would like to ask you if it makes sense to undergo a hair transplant in my current hair condition. I'm 33 and haven't noticed any hair loss for 1-2 years. My hair loss started at the temples, then the crown and general thinning. I've been using minoxidil and shampoo for hair loss (for like 6 months) but I won't use finasterid (I'm afraid of side effects). Which stage on the Norwood scale can I have now?

I'm considering a transplant in Turkey and I'm wondering if I can expect a decent resultor or will I just lose money, time and get some scars. In your opinion, approximately how many grafts would be needed for my head? If the result of transplant won't be good enough for me then will it look good or ugly after shaving head again? (especially in donor area) Thank you in advance for any answers!

Mainly because of price but I also have a good flight connections to Turkey from my place. Also they seem to have a lot experience in hair transplant.

Does it make sense?

You're a good age.
You have a well defined area of loss.
You have a good looking donor area.

Yes. It makes sense.

Until we learn two more things.

You're not taking finasteride.
You're basing your search on price first.

If you came to me I'd tell you to take more time to learn about your options. There are some excellent clinics in Turkey, but they won't be cheap compared to most of the clinics in Turkey.

I'd then tell you to speak to your doctor, or find one you can talk to about your hairloss, about trying topical finasteride. It was developed specifically for patients like you, that are afraid of side effects and the incidence of side effects is much lower for patients that use topical compared to oral, which is already unlikely alone.I bet you'd respond well, which means you would pay less for surgery since thickening would reduce the amount of hair you need to get a reasonably good result.

Finally, you have more hair to lose, and will lose, if you don't add to your medical regimen. While the hair on top of and in the crown of your scalp is thinner, it still adds to the overall effect of coverage if grown out and if they were to all leave then you'd need a lot more hair to get a good result.

Dr Yaman in Turkey is a great surgeon and reasonably priced. Joe Tillman has provided excellent advice and you should at least jump on topical finasteride or dutasteride.

Because of your hair loss pattern I personally would go on the meds first to see what improvements may happen and to stabilise the progression.

Ok, let's say I decide to take finasteride (to be honest I don't believe in much improvement after years of doing nothing but of course I realize that it can help anyway) . The question that remains is whether I can count on a good effect after the transplant or will I probably get a new, lower hairline and the area in the middle and crown will remain untouched? (This might look pretty unnatural) Is it even possible to increase the density of the hair in the middle without damaging what is already there? How many grafts would I need for a good effect and approximately how many can I get from my donor zone?
