How to tell if you have good donor hair?

Hi everyone,
Short of going to a surgeon to have your hair examined in person, how can you tell whether you have decent enough donor hair for a successful transplant?

If your hair is long you can lift it up, cut a cm square short, place a cm square cut on a piece of paler and take a close up picture, then count the hairs, bit crude but will five you an idea.
Also you could post some pictures on here to get opinions.

Best bet would be to get at least 3 opinions from experienced doctors as they do it every day so they know exactly what it is they are looking at and can give you a better assessment.

Last year I had a customer ask me to modify some off the shelf louvered doors as the cost of buying custom would have been extremely expensive. Initially I turned down the work as their simply was not enough material on the door itself to plane the edges down. He insisted and also stated he would take full responsibility for the doors because to be honest I didn €™t want to pay for something out of my own pocket after spending hours working on them only for it all to turn into crap or a year later start falling apart and have the customer call me back to complain, so it was fully explained to the customer and the responsibility was on him. I was able to plane them down to the dowel rods and attach 8 very thin metal plates to keep the whole thing together without falling apart. He was so pleased he paid me more than the quoted price.

Long term those doors can fall apart €¦ €¦ €¦ €¦ €¦ €¦just like ht €¦ €¦ €¦ €¦ €¦..someone can quote you a higher number or do something that looks good now €¦ €¦ €¦ €¦ €¦ €¦but what are the long term consequences. This is where experience and ethics comes into play.

Nothing wrong with pushing the limits as long as one takes personal responsibility.

It's very difficult to assess your own density as firstly visually you have little to compare it to only inspecting heads on a regular basis will be able to do that. Some patients can appear to have a great donor visually but the density might be lower as they have coarse hair likewise patients with fine hair can have good density and a lot of hair.

You should post some photos on here but if you are considering surgery go and see some Doctors in person for an assessment.

I agree with Garageland €¦ €¦ €¦ €¦ €¦ €¦those that do it day in and day out know instantly what they are looking at and what they have to work with along with understanding long term consequences when arriving at a number that makes sense.


Anyone can quote a larger number and everything will appear to be fine but what about when the donor area thins in 10 years or so €¦ €¦ €¦ €¦..will it stand the test of time or will your donor area now be bald. This is why several opinions are necessary and one must also understand there will always those who don €™t worry about what happens down the line be they clinics or patients themselves. As long as one as much information as possible they can make a better decision and at the same time take personal responsibility for making that choice.

This is in fact what makes the forums valuable, patients have more information available to them and differing opinions.

The person I modified the closet doors for was actually selling the house and the original doors were an issue during the showings. Maybe he didn €™t care if they fell apart a few years later as it would no longer be his problem. Some people think this way and it €™s an important point.

Reality is discovered only on the day of the extraction, since particularities of the skin and follicular units' anatomy are found out then and only then.

A test extraction on your request could help have an idea.
