Is transplanted hair permanent

Is it possible to lose transplanted hair? I've been researching for several months now, one conclusive post I found was on the hairlosshelp forum, for some reason I could not register, think I done something wrong.

I hope it's ok to add the link here, if not can the moderator remove it.

(Readers digest version) The best understanding science has right now is that we lose our hair because of a male hormone (androgen) called DHT that causes hair follicles in some men to miniaturize and eventually become nothing.

However, not all hair follicles are affected.

Most men have a band of hair at the back and sides that, when confronted with DHT in the blood, is totally unaffected.

When we have a transplant, we are simply moving that hair. And it stays resistant.

So unless the surgeon is stupid enough to transplant the 'unsafe' hair, or you suffer a medical condition like cancer (requiring cemo), oe you have alopecia, then it should stay with you till you pop your clogs.

As said well by modenese, keeping in the safe zone is important in avoiding this.

Some will naturally lose a percentage over time and this reflects the fact that the donor can slightly thin also in time, be it a small percentage, but a small amount of miniaturisation in the donor is acceptable and normal.

If a patient has DUPA or retrograde alopecia then more issues can arise at a later stage if hair is transplanted from effected areas.

There are a few other considerations but the main ones have been mentioned.

On rare occasions it can happen, also like others have said, if harvested out of the safe zone then you are at risk.

Hair Transplant is just redistributing the hair from densely packed areas to the areas that experience hair loss. So as far as you take the necessary precautions to prevent hair loss or experience some critical health conditions,

FYI... the hairloss help forum "in my opinion" is a terrible place to secure an informed decision on any and all hairtransplants... anyway.. in this example, I extracted slightly outside the safe zone... mainly to keep the extraction area even... oh and BTW the left side is the ARTAS and the right side is me evening things up...

As mentioned on another thread you started TC, the pattern in day one with Artas looks odd in the pics above because there was clear intent to even the pattern up by hand the next day.

Here is another picture immediate post op and 5 days post op (pic sent by patient) of the Artas pattern when we didn't plan manual fue on the second day. The pattern is much more natural.

Yes I would agree HLH is an honest site and has been around for a long time so it might have more history. But this site is equally as honest which is what is important when looking at it as a patient. I mean what €™s the point of having an information site that is geared towards patient research when you don €™t have the patient €™s interest in mind and that comment is directed to those sites that have a different view.

To answer your original question, yes the transplanted hair could probably fall out if it was destined to fall out in the original donor area. Most clinics recommend medication which is a personal choice. I think it €™s better to try and work the best with the hair you believe you will have left in the donor when you are much older and that is without medication but to each their own.

HLH is a great site, delays in posting may be checking for certain words, such as sexual words that need to be filtered.

Also, you mention pm`s.

Do you know how many spammers join the forums on a daily basis, would you like to get multiple spam pm s, this is usually why pm facility is not there or limited.

If you dont like a forum, simply dont read it or participate.

MG I can see what BM is saying about the PM €™s I didn €™t even know that until he just posted it and I can imagine it being very aggravating. Personally my opinion on the value of different sites is how well they are moderated and for whom. Of course we all need to be civil but still be able to bring forth a different point of view. Poorly run sites seem to be heavily moderated in favor of sponsors which would be bad for the prospective patients while others seem to have too many posters that are in fact not even real people but made up identities to establish some type of posting flow. Over a long enough period of time you can kind of figure it out but it does take some investment of time.

Even sites that are poorly run or maybe not as honest still have value in fact I have often posted more in those forums as it was a valuable way to learn. But sometimes what one sees going on as far as deleted information and such is so outrageous and so harmful to prospective patients that one finds themselves speaking up and eventually being banned as a result.
