How do doctors become a member?
Do they have to prove they're a good doctor?

No, the ISHRS is not a memberhship that requires specific levels of skill. It is simply an educational organization and nothing more. They have no policing abilities or a mandate to do so. This is why there are over 1200 members worldwide.

So, it's a bit worthless. I was in a city in South East Asia yesterday and seen a massive sign saying something about FUE ISHRS member.

Yeah it can be a little confusing for some people as hystorically a lot of crappy surgeons have used the fact that they were a member as an advertisment so that patients believe they had achieved a certain level of skill. To me this should be addressed in some way as over the years a lot of poor surgeons have still been members of the ISHRS.

I'm not saying it's a bad organisation it's not it's a very good one indeed, it's just the way some crappy docs use this as a key to get patients in is wrong.

That being said i'm not knocking ISHRS as they do some amazing things.

Being a member of ISHRS alone does not mean much as it is open to all hair surgeons that pay an annual membership fee. However, a member that consistently attends the annual scientific meetings shows his/her interest in following recent scientific developments as well as interacting with colleagues, as opposed to members that never attend meetings and use the membership as just a logo on his/her signature and website. Members that consistently send scientific abstracts and contribute to the scientific organisation with posters, lectures and table discussions are the surgeons that add to the value of the organisation. These surgeons are maybe 50-100 in the world that spend a significant amount of time and energy each year to follow and produce scientific information, thus should be respected.

When researching a HT surgeon I was told to make sure he/she is ISHRS certified. I thought it was some sort of guarantee of a minimum level of skill and ethics.

When I was researching Dr. Ilker Apaydin, the fact that he was an ISHRS member was the deciding factor for me. I even pasted his name into the ISHRS website to make sure he was indeed a member. He was. I thought to myself how could I go wrong with a doctor who's ISHRS certified?

But when Apaydin absolutely botched my HT, I began to question things. He is utterly and totally skill-less and without any modicum of ethics. His website is just a bunch of lies. In short, he is a fraudster.

So I went back and researched the criteria for becoming an ISHRS member, and as you all accurately point out, you just need to submit a CV and pay annual fees essentially. It is NOT a guarantee of skill or ethics b/c there is no screening for these things.

It's basically the "honor system."

Now I know why Apaydin stays a member. To use the ISHRS as cover for his slipshod unethical clinic! He has the ISHRS logo all over his website and mentions that he's an active member. That is a lie. Dedicated surgeons attend congresses almost ever year, yet Apaydin's only attended 4 out of the past 13 years....

Guys really have to be careful when looking for a HT surgeon. You can't even trust a doctor who's a member of the ISHRS!

The only advice I would give guys is to stick to the best. The absolute creme de la creme like Bisanga and so forth.

It's really an unregulated zoo out there....
