It may often be said that life begins at 40, but it appears modern men approaching their landmark birthday are still not quite there.

For a survey has shown it is not until the age of 54 that they finally feel grown up, enjoying life as a €œreal adult €.

A study of 1,000 men found it was the time most admitted they felt €œsettled and secure € in their lives, suggesting they take longer than previous generations due to financial pressures and late fatherhood.

The survey suggests 54-year-old men such as Simon Cowell, Hugh Laurie and Kevin Spacey are just at the beginning of their settled life.

The study, by a UK hair transplant centre, found that men no longer left behind their youthful insecurities at 40.

The results suggested many do not believe they have achieved a level of financial stability, or that their children were approaching self-sufficiency, until they are 11 years off retirement age themselves.

Two-thirds of babies are now born to a father aged over 30, with the average age of a first-time dad rising to 32.

The survey also revealed the insecurities which prevent men feeling €œsettled € younger, including physical imperfections, money troubles and loneliness.

The number one fear highlighted by participants was not being able to afford a first home, as rising property prices leave workers in rented accommodation.

It was followed by concern over losing their hair, and worry over being unemployed.

The process of ageing also featured heavily, with greying hair, a double chin and €œman boobs € also featuring in the top ten.

The fourth most common problem highlighted was a fear of being single, followed by not being able to afford to retire in eighth place, and ill health in ninth.

While some raised concerns about €œbad teeth €, €œwearing glasses € and €œdrinking too much €, others confessed they were worried about more serious issues including divorce, impotence and real poverty.

One hair restoration doctor, said: "It's not surprising that life doesn't begin till 54.

"We are all living far longer and, with living costs spiralling and fatherhood by being off by so many, men are inevitably going to take longer to feel settled. €

as times goes by, the time of getting "settled" is also increasing.. whether it is because of economy or our greed, but , it is .
