Hey guys, I'm 19 and the past month (since late February) or so I've noticed an uptick in hair loss compared to my normal, everyday amount. I lose about 20-40 hairs every time I wash my hair. In the past (not that I looked really close all the time) I barely remember seeing any in my hands after shampooing. I wake up to about 10-15 on my pillow every morning, in the past I never really studied my pillow but it definitely seems like more than usual. I also notice hair falling out easier (and some more dandruff than normal) when I scratch my head. (my head has felt more itchy as of late) It still maybe under the 100 hairs a day mark, its hard for me to tell exactly, but it definitely is more than usual for me.
Genetically speaking, male pattern baldness does not at all run in my family. My dad is nearly 60 and definitely has grey hair but doesn't seem to have lost much at all. His dad died in his mid 90's with a full head of jet black hair. My mom's father died in his late 40's but at the time had a full head of hair. Not to mention all of my blood related uncles have a full head of hair. Don't get me wrong, I totally get that some times people just get unlucky with their genes and that could be me. But it's kinda hard for me to believe that's happening especially because I'm so young. I have done some research on telogen effluvium because I had fairly bad mononucleosis in late September through most of October (about 4 months before i noticed some hair loss). I felt generally pretty bad for about a month and spent about 8-10 days in bed not able to eat much beside popsicles, soup, and water. I know that bad illness can trigger telogen effluvium but I'm not sure if my mono did or not. Obviously going to the doctor would be the best thing for me to do but being at college right now its not super easy for me to do, that's why I'm asking you guys for help first. Any ideas on what may be going on or suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
