Permanently damaged?

Hi all,
This is going to be kind of long, so please bear with me.

In July of 2009, I had a hair restoration procedure. they said they put 1,000 hairs in the hairline, and 500 in the crown. Well, almost 2 yrs later, I would say MAYBE 200 hairs at the most regrew, and that would be pretty generous, that's honestly all the difference that I can see. I went back to see him last August and he even said himself that he could see the surgery didn't really work, and he had no answers for why, and that he would fix it for me, which turned out to be a big lie. 2 days later, his secretary who was sitting in his office with me when he told me this, told me via email that they would give me 200 grafts for free, but wanted $2,000 to re-do the surgery, and when I was there, dollars were never mentioned, he just said he'd take care of it for me.

When I was there, I also told him of numbness and pain that I had in certain areas of my head, at which time he told me was extremely rare to still have so long later, well almost 2 yrs later after the surgery, I still have that numbness and pain.


Areas in the back of my head have always felt numb after the surgery, so I know that's connected to the surgery. It's not totally numb because I can feel myself touching it..but it's kind of numb, if that makes any sense at all? What I mean by the back of my head is, where the back of your head bumps out, right there. It hurts everytime I touch it.

I thought at first maybe the doctor cut nerves or something and it'll never heal, but if he did that, I wouldn't be feeling any pain, would I?

I've been thinking about looking for a Vascular Specialist, would that be the best kind of Doctor to look for?

Does anyone have any ideas why I've had that constant pain in the back of my head like that since the surgery?

Is it possible that I could be permanently injuired since it's been 2 yrs since the surgery and I'm still having pain in the back of my head?

Go for a Magnetoencophalography( MEG scan) it may be just coincidence that you have this pain after your hair transplant surgery.

Thank you for your reply. How would I go about doing that? Would I ask my Neurologist to suggest that? What exactly does this do? I've never heard of it before.

Personally from my own experience it took me well over 10 years to gain most of the feeling in the back of my head after numerous strips. What would drive me crazy is that I would get an itchy feeling every once in awhile but no scratching would relieve it. I would also get shooting and tingling pains every so often almost like the nerves were reestablishing themselves.

The shooting pains would only cause me to grimace for a short second or two. But overall I have experienced worse bodily pain in my life so it was not that big of an issue. My opinion it that you might just be overly sensitive to something that is quite normal and will go away in time. You could be digging yourself a deeper hole by going to another doctor and not giving it more time. Doctors are sometimes like little Johnny with a hammer in his hand. There always seems to be something that needs to be pounded with that hammer, especially when they are getting paid to do it.

The overly sensitive comment is not meant to offend but just a fact of life. Some people deal with pain better than others. I experienced none of these issues with fue.

Thanks for your reply, it gave me some hope for sure. Did you just have numbness? Wow, I can't imagine going thru that for 10 yrs, every day is a struggle for me. It's weird, this has just seemed to hit me really the last month, the overbearing pain and numbness, I suppose it's always been there the last 2 yrs, but nothing really overbearing like this to where it's made me notice so much.

The thing that's bothering me the most is the pain in the back of my head, like in the area in the back of my head where the back of my head kinda bumps out, did you have that problem too? The pain comes and goes, but it's always there if I touch it and it feels like it just goes to all over my head, it's hard to explain. Did you have anything like this at all?

Superstar there have been a few times where I was in excruciating pain which was not hair related. I refused to go to the doctor and just waited it out. In time each situation worked itself out as the body has the incredible ability to repair itself but most doctors think they can do better. And since they are getting paid they will do their best to convince you that the little white piece of paper they have plastered on the wall gave them more skill and ability than your own body.

My view is very different and I have very little trust in doctors being able to help me and have learned to help myself. It took me well over 10 years alone just to find a skilled and ethical ht clinic to start my repair.

My opinion is to just wait it out. The 10 year figure I gave you is not an exaggeration and it was probably closer to 15 years before the back of my head ever felt normal again. As I wrote I had shooting pains for the longest time but everyone is different. I think my threshold for physical pain is fairly high compared to others. I just can €™t seem to have blood drawn without passing out €¦..lol. You see we are all different.

But what exactly do you think another doctor can do for you? At best they might prescribe pain medication which can only make your situation worse in the long run. Of course this is just my opinion and not everyone is going to agree with it. Most people would tell you to load up on the pain killers but that is a mistake.

Most pain in the body can be relieved with some type of anti inflammatory medication. So maybe you should look into what type of diet and lifestyle causes inflammation in the body and what you can do to reduce it without using medication or the services of a doctor. You have to start somewhere it would seem like a good place.

I still have numbness in my crown area on the right side from the Hairlift that Dr. Brandy did on me back in 1989. I am not sure anything can be done about it. It is not painful but I would like to get the normal feeling of my scalp back. I am not aware that anything can be done. I have been told he severed arteries so ?? Has anyone else who had flap surgery ever experienced things like this? Since it is over 22 years I doubt it will just return to normal.

Fairly tight scalp for about ten year ´s , i dont think i suffered any pain for that amount of time. Numbness yes , good thing was if you ever bumped your head you never felt anything someone could give you a good hiding with a bat and still wouldn ´t feel a thing so i suppose something good come out of it.
