The use of nape hair

In my opinion and from my own experiences the use of nape hair could be very well be ill advised. What happens as you thin that area out from harvesting grafts is that the hair above it no longer has anything below it to layer itself upon. If you view the picture of the back of my head you will see the nape area has been stretched out and thinned from various ill advised procedures. But they left that part out how convenient.

If you think you will be able to grow you hair long to cover this area you will be sadly mistaken. As the hair reaches the length of where the nape hair should be it will stick out a noticeable distance from the scalp almost as if you were wearing a wig.

If you think that you will not care later in life my guess is that you would be wrong.

Hi TC,

Do you think this is a result of over harvesting in the area, or do you feel it is generally not a good idea to extract from this area what so ever?

I always felt the less coarse hair from the nape could be used well to soften the hairline as the calibre of hair from the traditional FUT Area can be very harsh in some lights.

Hairhunter, using nape hair is a personal choice. I am just trying to give some insight from my own experience. I didn €™t have a procedure where nape hair was used but a few of the procedures did stretch out and thin the nape of my hair along with severely raising the hairline around my ears. Nobody told me this was going to happen they left that part out so I could not make an informed decision.

As a result of having very little nape hair the hair above it cannot lay right and sticks out away from the neck if grown too long, giving the appearance of almost wearing a wig. Did you know this could happen? Well if you didn €™t you do now and that is the point of the post to help you make an informed decision.

I think you would be better served by using thinner caliber hairs slightly above the nape line. But this information can only help you when deciding.

Everyone is different as we all know and using Nape hair is a gamble.
I would be prepared to take the risk myself as my nape hair is very strong and looks as though i`ve not lost any.

Yes, BM I agree it €™s a personal decision and I €™m not trying to dissuade anyone. Maybe if I would have known I would have white walls around my ears I would have not have been convinced that the hairlift was the right choice, but then I will never know. I just think it €™s important to have as much information as possible so one can make an informed decision.

BTW I just noticed a thread on this forum where a repair patient is using nape hair, good for him I hope only the best for him. The new topic came to mind for me as a read a thread on another forum where the patient seems to have had too many strips and the hair does not lay right over the scar area giving the appearance of an indentation like he was wearing a sweat band all day.

When we say nape hair are we referring to the area under the hairline at the back or above it,in my my case the hair under the back hair line which the barber shaves is strong hair the area above the back hair line is weaker??

Mars I am referring to the hair above the neck hairline and not the hair below it but maybe others have a different defintion. That hair at the back hairline and above has been so thinned out in my case that the hair above it has nothing to layer it self on and so it can't really be grown long.

My hair grows in a V shape at my neck hairline, the V area is what i would use, will get some pictures of it tmw.

Interesting topic, i also have a v shape or a ducks tail at the back which is thick in the middle, i would look to use this for my temples in the future

Ok i understand topcat,my density is poor in this area and i def understand what you mean by the layering effect its like a natural taper haircut.

I have witnessed some excellent results with Nape hair, Sofarsogood to name one from this forum.
