What can I do for hair loss at 18?

Hi there.

18 year old right now, I noticed thinning in my temples around my 16th birthday, my family would tell me my hair looks normal but still I wasn't convinced. Roll on to this present day my hair has receded to a Norwood lll pattern in a short space of time. It`s reached the stage where I know I have to try something to stop all my hair falling out.

Reading online it appears Propecia does not work on the hair line and temples, is this true? I`m thinking of trying Rogaine foam as I`ve seen some positive results. Has anyone any other suggestions of things I can try?


If anyone has any advice definetly comment.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Hair loss is tough to deal with at any age never mind in your teens. Propecia can help prevent further loss and maybe regrow some of your lost or weak hairs back, however it is usually a life long commitment and there are possible side effects. Rogaine foam is a good option also as it to promotes new growth, it also has the possibility of some side effects.

You could try speaking to your family doctor to see what he advises as they will know your history, health etc. You could also do some online consultations with hair transplant doctors to see what they advise in your situation.

Have you tried buzzing your hair short to see if you suit the look as this can help.

Hello Bigmac.

I`m waiting for my Rogaine foam arriving in the mail after ordering it online. I do keep my hair short which helps to some degree. Fingers crossed the Rogaine will work.

Am I right in thinking that if I stop using it I`ll lose any hair I gained?

Correct, if you stop using the foam for a pro longed period of time you will lose any hair gained.

There is no treatment you can take that will help your hair loss after the treatment has ceased. That is called a cure. Dealing with loss at 18 is tough, I've been there, but as already stated you should speak to your doctor. Basically, you're doing all you can because Propecia is probably not something you should be taking at this time. I'm not a doctor but I feel it is best to avoid Propecia till you are out of your teens at the very least.

Thank you for posting your story sometimes we can obsess about things and especially our looks well I can , your so young at 18 years old please just dont do anything in a hurry , the advice you have been given already is good leave the HT and the Propecia alone for sure hopefully the foam will help , if you dont mind I would suggest you take a Pictures as you are right now the hairline the temples and the crown and then use the foam and then take the pictures again every 3 months as it takes time for things to happen with the foam and this will give a personnel log and you can monitor yourself , I wish you all the best young man dont let this drag you down get on enjoying your life the support is here for you

Thanks guys for the advice. I'll slog it out a few more years to see how much hair falls out. Is there more of a risk using Propecia in my teenage years? Is it safe to use the Rogaine foam?
