What % of all HTs are considered 'successfull'?

or I can ask the question the other way

How common are bad results, out of all HTs performed in Europe and US?Whats the ratio good:bad HT

Every time you visit clinics website you come accross terms like: state of the art, completly natural, undetectable, 90-99% growth,99% satisfaction rate and so on..

Do hair transplants live up to whats advertised?
If they do then why people go for wigs, tattoo(SMP)..

It almost sounds like if you have money you can get state of the art results

My guess is we will never know REAL numbers

Hi mg42,

I think in some ways you answered your own question, it ´s probably impossible to know.

That said, for example in the thread Modenese started http://www.hairlossexperiences.com/view_topic.php?id=3751&forum_id=2

being happy can sometimes be down to the individual, what one person is happy with another maybe not. Do you keep quiet or say something because you would not be happy with their result, and risk upsetting them.

Obviously we can ´t speak for everyone but some people just don't like the thought of surgery, maybe they want more hair than surgery can give them, in respect of wigs for example the density can be way more than you even had with a good head of hair, not limits as such.

"Do hair transplants live up to what's advertised?"

Well, it ´s hard one to answer, have you been miss-sold as such, promised a certain density placed for example but then it was changed, were you totally open with the clinic about your goals and expectations or were you so intent on having hair you glossed over a few issues and hoped you would be happy?

It is sad that poor results are still being performed today with the steps made in the industry over the last 10 years or so there should be no need for poor placement, poor hair line designs, low density etc, but they do. Forums like HLE help a great deal with research and fight through the marketing and hype, and find what is best for you short and long term.

From a potential patient point of view, just research, and when you think you have, then do more, dig as deep as you can, ask as many questions as you can, speak to previous patients, see them live if possibly. Take your time, read between the lines and as much as possible think about it all logically rather than being swayed by emotion. A good result can be a marriage between patient and clinic understanding each other, what is and what is not possibly.

another thing I find interesting is that I heard clinics sayig that about half of their patients are repair patients,

and I dont think all these patients are repaiting old style plugs from 70, 80s and 90s..

also noticed even many of well known successs stories had couple of unsuccessfull HTs at first..

my gut feeling is there must be a lot of crappy work out there, maybe not butcherred cases but more like a guy on HTN thread who is getting refunded

I believe there are a lot of guys out there in their late 20s whom have had large FUE sessions in their early 20s, for example 2000 grafts to fill in the temples. Results look great for 12-18months and then they suffer further loss to their native hair and it looks appalling. This is particulary the case when the patient refuses to take Finasteride.
In some aspects i dont believe the Clinic is at fault. The patient may tell the HT surgeon that nobody in his family goes past NW5, when in reality they are all NW7 by the age of 25. They may also state that there hairloss is very slowly progressive, instead of saying they have been suffering from hairloss for 18months, they say its been going on for over 5yrs.
But then you see many patients posting their results, particulary on HTN and you immediately question why has this HT surgeon operated on this guy who is so young and given them a NW0 hairline. Its these patients that suddenly stop posting 6 months after their hair transplant. hopefully they are enjoying their new hair but for how long, who knows.
I learnt a lesson 14yrs ago, i inherited some money and decided i was going to get my first strip HT. I visited 4 different clinics in the UK. The first 3, told me how great i would look like after 2000 grafts and then fortunately the last one told me i was not a candidate (i was 21) and if i wanted to do something about my hairloss then try out this amazing new drug Propecia (it had only just come to market in the UK then), well here i am 14yrs later and thanks to Propecia my hairloss has remain unchanged. He then showed me some photos of some horrendous scars and asked if i wanted something like that on the back of my head. The first 3 Clinic said i would not have a visible scar.
Thanks to that HT surgeon i saved myself from potentially being another future repair patient. But in all industries you have charlatans, you just have to avoid them.

Hi mg42,

You ´re correct, many of the repairs performed today are from recent HT ´s unfortunately, a smaller % now are from the "old days" of plugs, lifts etc.

Hi Coppman,

Lucky for you, you must look back now and count your blessings; you talk a lot of sense in your post. Losing one ´s hair can be very emotive and some will do/say anything to get fixed without looking at the long term consequences, especially when younger when the feelings can be stronger.

There must be a joint responsibility in some issues, if a clinic can obviously see that a person ´s motivations are misdirected then they should be refused surgery, that said as you said it ´s not always that easy to see, especially if the person has been refused by other clinics they become better at putting up a screen. But just because "another clinic" would perform the procedure does not justify you doing it.

When a person is refused surgery the initial reaction can be one of anger, you have taken away their dream. It ´s funny that they don ´t put on the breaks and think why they have been told to wait most of the time, again, especially when younger, but instead go on a little mission to find a clinic that says yes, and unfortunately they will always find one.

I think you ¨ll find bad results are common, who ´s to blame? the clinics for doing it, why do they do it? because people let them.

Sorry for being an old git, but today everyone wants everything now, no waiting and happy to blame everyone if they are not happy, great example posts on this forum; what has happened to being responsible for your actions.

There ¨s good and bad everywhere, if you get screwed tell people the facts so it doesnt happen to them, otherwise accept it and move on.
