Alcohol and hair transplants

So I recently had a HT in Turkey and all was good.

The advice I was given was don't drink alcohol 3 days before surgery, which I understand is to avoid thin blood, excessive bleeding etc.

The advice post surgery was to avoid alcohol for 7 days...

Now my question is, post surgery exactly how detrimental can alcohol be after the HT? What is the deal with this?

Could it really make or break your HT?

Cheers

Tom

Hi Tommy. As you know already alcohol thins the blood, if you drink too soon after surgery there may be a chance of bleeding in the transplanted area which could possibly cause grafts to pop out before they`ve had time to anchor in. Obviously, if you drink enough to affect your coordination you run the risk of bumping the area and damaging the grafts. I waited 4 days after surgery before having a beer. My result turned out fine.

Good stuff, thanks mate.....I abstained for 7 days as required but I could of murdered a drink post surgery just due to the relief of it all.

I was also prescribed aspirin too which is obvs a blood thinner so confused me a little.

Im now making up for lost time and have enjoyed a drink this weekend :)

Hi Tommy, not sure about the Aspirin. Maybe ask the doctor if that was prescribed as pain prevention or for thinning the blood when flying.

Hi Tommy!
Having a drink even the first night after surgery wouldn't make or break your result. Each clinic has slightly different recommendation concerning when to resume alcohol - 1, 2 or 3 days after is the most common recommendation. Some clinics don't address it at all. No patient should consume so much alcohol that their walking and talking is impaired but a sensible glass of wine or 1 drink wouldn't harm the procedure. The main reasons a patient should avoid alcohol after surgery - 1) don't mix alcohol and pain meds. 2) If oozing a bit of blood after surgery the alcohol wouldn't be helpful in this situation. It's best to wait few nights before resuming drinks.

Thanks for your response Janna, I guessed some of the reasoning was just common sense, but yes the oozing and mixing meds makes sense too, I guess it all boils down to being careful.

Thanks again :)

I'm not sure drinking alcohol is the best idea. If you can bear with it, it's better not to. Of course, it's quite difficult for an addicted person. In such a case I recommend applying for this rehab center to get all the necessary recommendations.

Which rehab centre would that be?

I am a beer trader in my free time as I like to try new beers. The darker the beer the better for me, stouts, porters, browns. Anyways I usually have a beer or two with dinner 4-5 nights a week. It’s not like I’m hammering them down. This shouldn’t affect hair growth hair loss at all correct?
I’ve tried researching on the internet, but everyone knows how that goes.

Hi @ImJustAGuy, there is no direct link between alcohol and hair loss. Although, excessive and heavy drinking can have some obviously negative consequences to your overall health. For example, nutritional deficiencies or hormonal issues that can affect the hair quality. With so many other factors to consider it is unlikely there will be a definitive answer. Everything in moderation is probably the sensible approach and if having a hair transplant discuss with your surgeon pre and post-op do´s and don´ts.

Interesting post that Hair Dr.....didnt realise excessive alcohol could actually affect hormone levels and effect nutrient intake? Probably explains why when I've had too many my little mr downstairs isnt quite as excitable as when sober hahah. :ROFLMAO: On a serious note though good answer to the guys question and thanks for taking the time to answer his question.

I feel like i should state i don't drink excessively, unless one of my sports teams pisses me right off, which happens quite often. :ROFLMAO:. Its really a beer a day/every other day.

For future reference, I think it is always best to avoid alcohol around the procedure, certainly post op. You may touch the grafts in your sleep if drinking post op and dislodge them.
