Scar - advice welcome

Hi folks, hope you’re keeping well during these crazy times. A bit of background on myself - when I was a child I had a skin condition that made me scratch which included the top of my head leaving the centre top of my scalp scarred and with a bald patch. In my 20s i would have done anything to try and correct it and stupidly had an op which left me with a scar maybe 4/5 cms long and 1cm wide. I don’t think the op helped the top of my head at all. Because of this I can’t wear my hair any shorter than a grade 4. Ideally I’d like to cut down to a 1 or even 0. Now in my early 30s I’d like to do something about it. Apart from the original area at the top (which I can cover more or less with the rest of my hair) I have decently thick hair. My main objective is to try and correct the scar but would potentially be interested in seeing if the same surgeon could help with the bald patch at the top.

would FUE still be considered the best option out there? hesitant about SMP due to having to top it up again and again. I am living in Europe.I'd be keen to hear from people who had scar procedures!

Thanks for reading !

What was the condition you had? There are people story's that I've read that suggest scarring Alopecia is very itchy and makes your hair fall out. I'd say you need to make sure the skin condition has been cured or is under control. I think most people opt for FUE these days, easier recovery times and shorter hair cuts.
Did anything grow in the bald patch when you had the op?

Was eczema kev - which I still have of course but it doesn't itch or cause me much trouble like when I was young. Very little if anything grew. It was done by a plastic surgeon in a public hospital with little experience in the field.

I'm not sure how eczema affects growth but most probably the doctor who did it lacked the experience and might have killed the grafts. It's best to see a hair transplant doctor who knows what they're doing so they can examine your scalp and tell you what they are able to do.
How big is the bald patch? You could try the hair fibers like Toppik until you sort something out.

Hello John. What treatments did you use for this? Are you still using them to keep it under control?
You have a few options if a hair transplant doctor says they are confident the hair will grow if they do a transplant on you. They may do a tester on you with say 20 - 50 grafts to monitor growth, they may cover the whole area without a test session.
You have the option of having your FUT scar excised out to hopefully create a better closure.
You could go for a fue procedure, have the bald spot filled and grafts placed into the scar.
Pictures would help to provide a better opinion but ultimately it will be a hair transplant doctor who will let you know what they think the best course of treatment is.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I'm not taking any treatments for the skin condition. Nowadays it isn't too bad thankfully. I will need to do some research on doctors. having looked through this sub forum the last few days you seem like a great source of knowledge so if you have any recommendations give me a message. Thanks again.

Sorry to read of this. Ideally photos would help to see the original issue and also the resultant scar from your surgery and its position also as this plays a part in revision and viability. FUE to both are probably a safer option and at a lower density (30 FU per cm2), is a common approach for scar tissue.

Glad this forum is helping.

Without seeing any pictures it`s hard for anyone to offer their thoughts on a suitable course of action but assuming it`s just scar tissue now you probably best off going for some fue grafts planted there. How many, who knows without pictures or a doctor's recommendation.

That scar should be able to have grafts placed into it and produce a nice result. What about the top of your head?

Yeah I'm thinking about leaving that for now. It bothers me but not as much as the back. My concern is shock loss or my hair changing . Only 32 so might leave it for another few years. What do you reckon?

I doubt you will suffer much shock loss. It all depends on how many grafts you need. If they simply cut so many hairs to a short length and extract there will be no need for shaving. I have a video somewhere of that being done to me. I`ll find it and add it.

Hi mate just seen ur pics
If u have thinnin crown maybe try finesteride to help thicken it up
Regards to scar I had 350 fue put in
It looks ok when my hair is long but if I cut short can still see scar
I maybe need 3 to 4 ops of fue to hide it more
Fue into scars does work but some dont grow
If u want to go short combo of fue to give u the natraul look along with smp to cover it up much better
U could try dermatch for now but it is messy and abit of a pain in the arse
