I am a NW6 and started Finasteride at 49yrs old with minoxidil foam. I did not notice new growth but did see some thickening of existing shafts. I wish I had started it at 40 yrs old!
I was told it can still help if there is a likelihood of the sides and crown receding further. So, if you have a transplant you don´t end up with a gap between the side and top. If the transplant is done well it should compensate anyway, but there is still a risk it looks thinner. I think the area is known as the "laterals".
In my uneducated opinion id say it's likely necessary that you get on meds with such loss if your considering a transplant in the future. You could be pleasantly surprised at how the meds improve things.
