How weird, I was just coming on here to sat that I've bitten the bullet and ordered a 3 month supply of their topical finasteride/minoxidil solution. I'll use this thread to show how I get on if you like?

That would be great and appreciated.
Best of luck

It will be great to follow your progress. I’ve been hearing positive things about the topical solutions.

Just a quick update:
I received my 3 month supply of the topical finasteride/minoxidil solution a few days ago.
It comes in little bottles with a pipette which sucks up 1ml of solution at a time. The instruction is to dot on to your affected areas twice a day, so I have been doing this since Friday.
Being a liquid it's very watery, which makes it hard to stop it from trickling down your head and face, but I just try to use my finger to dab it slightly if I feel it going.
It has a pleasant smell and although it makes the hair feel like there is product in it, I wouldn't say its greasy. No irritation or anything at the moment either.
Also, it was £55 for the 3 month supply (half price)
it helps. Will keep u posted

That’s a good deal you got. With continued use you’ll master how best to apply it. Good to hear no irritation. Remember to take pictures to monitor your progress.

After giving it some consideration, I too have taken the plunge with this deal. I’ve been on Finasteride tablets initially daily, then dropped to 3x per week, since 1st Jan. I’m slightly paranoid about side effects and I feel I’m the sort of person to talk myself into them by overthinking things! At the very least I like the thought of not systematically targeting DHT through my entire body and rather focussing the biggest effect where it is required.

Interested to see results. I’ve found Regaine foam incredibly easy, literally apply and it’s gone 5 mins later. Will be interesting to see how this compares and if it leaves much residue of any type. Feel I need all the help I can get as the base of my donor, I’d initially thought I’d cut it too short, but I can see now that is does seem to be miniaturing there. It is quite recent though I think so I’m hoping it’s not beyond help.

Will provide updates, cheers.

Great to hear I'm not the only one so I'm looking forward to seeing how you get on.
It's more of a pain to use than regaine foam as like I said above, it's very watery so it's hard to not get it trickling down your head/face.
After it's dried my hair does feel like its got some product in it and it sticks the hairs together which exposes more scalp, but I just rough it up a bit and it's not too bad then.

Something I wondered though...
Obviously hair is taken from the back of the head for a transplant-is that because those follicles are resistant to DHT or is that part of the scalp resistant to DHT?

Hi. My understanding is that your ‘safe’ area is effectively a band around your head and so at least for some people, the base of your hairline is generally not considered to be within that safe zone (not the absolute expert on this though). I think I have seen images of others where it’s receding slightly from the bottom also. If indeed that is what I am experiencing then it is also definitely just in its early stages, unlike the recession at the top, and there is plenty of hair still there, so I’m hoping it falls into the category of hair that is recoverable.

I must be honest too and say that the hair meds isn’t something I expected to be getting into. Until a few months ago I didn’t realise there was such thing as an effective hair medication. When trying to explain it to people though I have to be very clear that there is no cure for baldness, treatment is like for many other conditions, there are a number of angles off attack that need to be investigated. If you were to categorise your hair loss as a percentage, each course of action might reduce that overall % but you can’t expect to reverse time to what you were before the balding commenced. In respect to my efforts, being a Norwood 5 (at least) means I‘m getting to the point of wanting to throw the kitchen sink at the problem! My plan had been to get a transplant around January 2023, a year after commencing meds, but I’ll have to consider if that is still viable. I really need to give my hair enough time to respond to any meds as each healthy folicle is going to be critical I feel. My current regime is Finasteride, Minoxidil and Microneedling. I’m hopeful that switching to topical Fin turns out to be a wise move. Obviously now I have more areas to apply it to!

I am going to increase my efforts though, going to add in Nizoral shampoo a few times per week, start taking vitamin supplements daily and going to look at my diet too. I’m assuming switching to a better diet has to give some benefit and to be honest I drink too much alcohol since COVID started, I should give up really, but just taking going back to twice a week would be a good start. It’s obvious the impact it has on your skin, so it stands to reason that it can only help with hair health. I expect none of these to produce anything remotely spectacular in terms of results, but if my current regime improves things by 10% and this extra effort adds another 2% even, then that’s important.

It’s hard to say for sure but I do feel the meds have had some benefit so far. I shaved down to 3mm to start my regime this yeah, so there is always new growth just as my hair gets longer again, but it does seem stronger/thicker than it did previously…..as it’s grown back it is more inclined to stick upright, whereas it typically just feel flat before. I’d also swear there are more active follicles now, but it’s entirely possible this is all my imagination. I’ll have a better idea at around 6 months I guess.

Cheers

TBH all I know is that hair transplanted in from the donor doesn’t die from the DHT exposure the same way the native hair did, due to genetic differences. Obviously they transplant the follicle and also a small amount of tissue too, so I’m not sure if it is the follicle or the tissue that is genetically different, or both.

I’m 4 days into using this now and so far so good. It’s a bit more effort to apply than Regaine, but no problem really and it’s easy to ensure you apply the right amount. Dries reasonably quickly and I’m feeling no need to rinse it off or anything like that.

From a psychological perspective I’m preferring it to taking oral Finasteride as even on just 3x1mg per week, I was becoming paranoid about side effects, whereas applying this twice a day is the same as 1mg per day and I’m not thinking about sides at all.

Time will tell how effective this is but even at full price it’s maybe £1.20 per day so affordable enough.

I've nearly finished my first bottle. No noticeable improvement yet, as expected. Really hoping it works as can't go back to the tablets

I’ve been considering this aswell. How has your progress been? Any reason you opted for the lotion over the spray diffuser they offer?

Also I’ve just posted a thread asking about safety of topical Fin when you have young children. How long would you say the application on your scalp takes to absorb?

I currently use regaine foam and that seems to absorb pretty quickly. My hairs quite short so don’t end up with too much on my follicles. And I also give it a quick rinse under the tap daily.

A bit more concerned with Fin, as it hasn’t been through official approval, which would quantify risks such as the aforementioned and detail then on the labelling of it was a big concern.

I'm finishing up my 6th bottle and not buying anymore. I've just gone back to the oral fin, taking 1mg every other day to hopefully avoid sides. Also gone for a different brand to before.

I conclusion, the topical fin hasn't worked for me. Yes I could try it for longer, but I don't think it'll work. This is probably because my thinning is overall on the top of my scalp, rather than just a concentrated area like the crown or temples.

I went for the solution via the pipette due to thinking that the spray would cause too much wastage. However, the solution is very runny so is quite hard to apply to be honest. I would probably go for the spray if there was a next time.

With Unthin, they will pretty much always offer you deals on your 1st purchase and future purchases, if you sound like you're going to cancel. So don't pay the outright price

Thanks for the response. I’m sorry to hear it didn’t work for you.

I’m guessing there were no sides either, since you haven’t mentioned any? You mention going back to oral Fin, how long were you on that before? Did you make any gains from that? And if so any losses once you switched to the topical?

Yep, forhims are offering 50% off for first 6m order (£139), which isn’t much more then Regaine foam sets you back. Good to know you can negotiate discounts later aswell. I’m also hoping more people will enter the UK market, driving down prices.

No sides that I noticed.
I was on 1mg oral fin daily for 6 months. I was definitely shedding less hairs in the shower and do think it was starting to make a difference. Due to loss of libido sides I stopped taking it for a few weeks, then took 1 every few days, but was slack with it. This was probably for a few months and I certainly lost the progress I'd made.
I then took the plunge with the topical fin but because of me messing about with the oral dosage it's hard to say if if any losses from the topical. I was definitely still losing a number of hairs in the shower though.

Sorry to hear you had sides from the oral Fin as it sounds like it was working for you.

I tried it 15y ago. Got sides within a month so had to stop it and didn’t dare try it again.

It’s atleast promising to here you got no sides from the topical after 6m of use.

As you say it’s hard to judge what the topical did. I’m guessing the initial shedding was you losing the gains from the first 6m of using oral daily. Then it’s uncertain if the continued loss was a continuation of this because the topical wasn’t doing anything for you. Or that initial shed some say they get when the first start using Fin.

Did you lose much hair when you first started the oral daily?
