Finasteride = Sleep Apnea & Insomnia

Hi All,

Has anyone else suffered sleep problems when taking Finasteride?

I've had two hair transplants now, one in 2014 and one earlier this year.

I started Finasteride after the 2014 transplant but stopped as I was getting a dry mouth at night and was putting weight on.

I had my second transplant this year and was really keen to stick to them meds as my hair loss continued quite dramatically after the first transplant.

I've been on Propecia (1mg a day) since February of this year and its only now that it's really starting to impact my sleeping. I am awake most nights and my mouth is so dry.

I really want to stick at it, so if anyone has any suggestions, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Have you tried reducing the dose to 0.5 mg per day?

Hopefully, this will work for you. You could even take it every other day on the lower dose and gradually increase if the symptoms are gone.

Fin is nasty stuff, I wouldn't be surprised. It lowers levels of brain-protective chemicals "allopregnanolone" - so it could easily produce sleep problems I think.

What dose and frequency were you on? How long did you take it for? Did your sleep return back to normal?

I’ve added 0.5mg once a week to my regimen. Hence, the questions.
Waiting to see if I get sides or notice any benefit.

I added a few more questions to my post if you’d be kind enough to answer, thanks.

6 months...I just recently quit. Sleep seems a little better but not much.

Thanks for that. Were you on that dose everyday?
Hopefully, your sleep returns back to normal soon.

It’s a side that we don’t hear much about.

Did you gain weight again when you resumed it?

Hi @Bigmac thanks for checking in.
So I reduced my dosage to 0.5,mg every other day and that has made a world of difference to my symptoms of dry mouth and sleep apnia.
in the new year I will up it to 1mg every other day and let you know how I get on. Thanks for the advice

Hi @Kevboy. No weight gain this time around but I I think I understand my body more as I age. 30-40 is very different to 20-30. I concentrate on my training and diet these days. I exercise more and make sure I understand my body enough to make sure I'm in a calorie deficit.
Hope that helps. good luck
