Hi all, I just wanted to share my experiece of my FUE hair transplant due to a receeding hairline.
Firstly I am a 27 year old from Surrey in England and would describe myself as healthy. Hair loss runs in my family with both my father and Grandfather suffering with a receeding harline and balding in the crown area.
Bart from Pro Hair Clinic has forwarded me the information of my transplant:
Procedure date: 25th May 2013
Goal: 2500 grafts to restore frontal hairline with 50 graft cm2 density
Start of Proceedure: 8.30
Extractons: dual side extractions + 1 assistant counting + 1 assistant performing microscopic control of the grafts
End of Extractions: 11.30
Start of Recipient site: 12.30
Start of Implantation: 13.55
End of Implantation (dual side implantation): 16.35
Graft count:
1 hair grafts: 552
2 hair grafts: 1494
3 hair grafts: 410
4 hair grafts: 48
5 hair grafts: 1
Punch used: 0.75-0.80 mm titanium tipped punch
Slits: 0.6-0.9 mm
That's the technical bit finished and will probably mean more to some people than others but I'd like to get across the way I was looked after and how I experienced non pressured advice in the decision period on going ahead with the proceedure.
I had been looking into having a hair transplant for a few years and following a friend of mine having a proceedure carried out by Pro Hair Clinic in 2010 I decided to contact them.
I filled out the online form on Pro Hair Clinics website and sent some images on 12th March 2013. I had a response from Bart the same day indicating that he believed I wold be a suitable candidate for FUE. I replied with some obvious questions:
1. What would the cost of 2000 grafts be?
2. Can a consultaion take place in the UK or would it have to be carried out in Belguim
I was told that 2000 hair transplants would cost in the region of 5000 Euros which I personally was fine with. I was told that no consultation could not take place in the UK but I could have the consultation the day before the proceedure if booked and so I wouldn't have to travel abroad twice.
I did have more questions regarding recovery times and success rate and Bart answered these very promptly and informatively. There success rates are 90-95% and 90% of treatment signs will have gone within 2 weeks.
Following colecting all the facts I made the decision to go ahead with the proceedure on 19th March and a date was arranged for the consultation on the 23rd May 2013 and the proceedure to take place the following date. It was also agrred that it would be a one day process.
I decided to travel out with my partner on the Eurostar train from Ebsfleet on the morning of the consultation and we picked the Crown Plaza Antwerp hotel as it is very close to the clinic. The journey was nice and easy with just one change of train required in Brussels. I would also recommend the hotel.
I arrived at Pro Hair Clinic at 3.00 pm for the consultation. I met Sabine who would be leading the proceedure and we decided on where the hairline would come to look natural. This was handled very well and as with probably all patients going for the proceedure my expectations were too high and Sabine helped me see that it wouldn't look natural and so I took her advise and was happy. They then proceeded to shave my head ready to get straight on with it the next morning.
My parter and I arrived at the clinic at 8.00 am the next day and we were shown to my private room. My partner was allowed to stay here for the day and both of us were offered lunch which was a nice touch.
I then took a sedative and got dressed in a gown ready for the process. Sabine and the team too me into the treatment room and made me feel at ease (I think the fact that everybody's English was so good helped), I then laid face down on a massage table and tried to relax. The team carried out the anistetic injections which was a little bit painful but not over the top and only lasted for a couple of minutes before the area felt numb. The team then bgan on the extractions and I was able to drift in and out of sleep. Before I knew it the team said it was time for lunch.
I was taken back to my private room and rejoined my girlfriend. We had lunch and the session resumed, after a short while I was asked to lay on on back so the work could begin on my front and at this point I was allowed to watch a DVD (They have a pretty good selection or you can take your own). The injections were carried out on the front again were a little painful for a few minutes before I could relax again. The team were constantly checking I wasn't in pain which was nice. Again after what felt a short time the proceedure was completed and I was taken back into my private room.
Bart then joined us and went through the after care proceedure and gave me a pack with a special spray and shampoo. I thanked the team and we were on our way. Bart was even good enough to give us a lift back to our hotel as he was passing it.
I got back to the hotel and felt in no pain just a bit tired. We ordered room service so I wouln't have to go out again and I settleddown for the night. I didn't get alot of sleep that night as I was worried I would roll onto my side and dislodge the implants but luckily I didn't lose any! I experience some swelling of the face but was told this was normal so don't worry
We were in Belguim for the entire next day and I even found the courage to go to a retaurant that night for a meal. We left the hotel the next morning and travelled on the train bsck to England. The one thing I was surprised about is the fact that not a lot of people stared at my head on the way home.
Sleeping for next few day was not the best as I slept sittng up at 45 degrees to aid recovery and the back of the head felt itchy for a week but apart from that no side effects.
On day 7 I started washing off the scabs on the front of the head using the special shampoo and most were gone after this shower. I didn't apply the shower directly to the area but instead used a measuring cup to pour water on it. I had another shower the following day and the rest of the scabs came off.
Since then I been recovering well and have just started reaching the stage where the implants are shedding to allow the new hairs to grow from the implanted roots again.
I have told everyone I know at work and friends about the procedure and they have all been supportive. I wore a hat from day 3 until 8 if I went out and after I removed the scabs I went out on day 10 with light cover up make up on the area and no one noticed. After 2 weeks post op I go to work everyday and face the public with no make up on the area and nobody stares or has commented negatively.
I will continue to post as the regrowth phase continues.
I would def recommend Pro Hair Clinic and can't thank the team enough!
